Hi mate,

G3 is pretty aggressive, so to refine the finish you need to finish up with a lighter abrasive; such as SSR1.

As for a hand polish and wax; you can use ClearKote Vanilla Moose Glaze followed by Carnauba Moose Wax - as these look great on red.

There are some other options too, but these are more expensive.

Gareth :)

yeah i know the g3 is a bit harsh but i might not need that yet as i will be flatting it off with some 1500 before compounding, and i got some fine stuff for after but i dont think its much good (age)

ive decided to give the car another coat of paint since posting up last time, so once the rain fcuks off and the sun comes back out i can get on and paint and will get some bits from you mate to do it.

whats the damage for them bits with postage mate

Hey Gareth,

Earlier this year i ordered some products from you ( clay, polish, glaze, selaent & wax) which are all top notch.

However i want to get rid of some swirls in the paint so want some SSR1.

I have a few questions though.

1. At what stage do i use this product, after the clay?

2. Do i use it with a machine if so, what pads do i use and can thy be fitted to my 4.5 inch grinder?

Cheers,

Gareth.

SSR1 wouldnt really remove many swirls, its more of an after youve removed them polish. you'd need to look at the 2, 2.5 or 3 range. altho, id reccomend the meguiars #80 and #83

a grinder :aaah: :aaah: :aaah: i wouldnt advice you used this either, the rpm of a grinder is far too high to be used on paint work. my makita polisher goes from 600rpm to 3000rpm, but its only every used between 600-1800ish

but hey, ill let gaz reply

Ahh Quality, i was'nt sure what people were using as a machine polisher lol, so it appears the good old grinder is a little to harsh

Actually thinking about it - we may have a machine polisher at home. :)

Do you recommend using machine power for removing swirls though?

Gareth.

machine power is the ONLY way to remove swirls mate :Q well, the only easy ish way

scratch x is a scratch remover but can be used to remove swirls by hand, but id be f**cked if you could do a whole car with it.

fiesta paint isnt too hard, took me about 6 hours to do the red xr2i 16v i had via pc
(porter cable. its a random orbital polisher) it took me near on 11 hours, about 8 or so was solid polishing on a clio 182 i did in members gallery

find the polisher and post up some pics / specs :D

Gareth - as Ian has said, machine polishing is the only way to properly remove swirls; if you're working by hand the best you can aim for is to reduce them using products like SSR1 and SSR2. By machine, you can use stronger products to get the job done.

No grinders though or the paint will disappear before you know it!

Hi all just had my car roll out of the bodyshop with a new paintjob. Was 2 days ago and im wondering how to go about its first wax/polish. Everyone keeps on telling me to use wax because of the winter weather. Ive only got polish :( and need some advice. The colour is a flip like the purple/blue/green. What would you recommend? Ive only washed and chammoid it so far and like i say am wanting to protect it but make it shine more!!! :D Pics will be up soon in gallery just got to find cable for digicam lol. Oh yea and the wheels have been done in anthracite so i would just use same as bodywork yes/no? thanks scott. :P

i was recommended a pure wax for mine after it was painted due to the paint not being fully hard, and i say a pure way, a wax polish is no good.

well, thats what i was told, i was going to paint more bits so havent got round to getting anything for mine yet so cant say from first hand yet

You can polish immediately after painting - the paint will have already had a harsh compounding from the bodyshop - the polish you use will be far, far finer. You should hold off using glazes/sealants/waxes for 30 to 60 days, as these block the pores of the paint - usually you want this as it offers protection, but whilst the paint is fresh it needs to breathe to work harden.

I've got some seriously tired paint which is Ford Electric Current Red on a Ka. What's the cheapest set of products that could bring it up a bit, i dont need a show shine, just something to make it look half decent again.

Hi James,

It depends how far you want to go - if you don't want to remove swirls and the like (very hard to do on a budget, impossible by hand), go for a good all-in-one polish topped with a good wax. This'll bring the paint up, make it look pretty good, and offer protection. An example would be to polish with Poorboy's Polish with Sealant and then top with ClearKote Carnauba Moose Wax. This is an inexpensive combo that would work well on Electric Current Red.

If they've been installed by a rotary, you'll need to go over the car again with a finer compound and break it down fully, to ensure you don't leave any buffer trails.
