I don't think the rear wipers are necesssssarillllly chavvy, just a weird mismatch on the Mk3 IMO! It's hardly Viper stripes
The engine must've come on a long way if the clutch is holding it up??!
Is everything in and head on now??

No, you can't have it
Yeah i had the cam checked out pal straight away.
Its looking like rings or turbo. However once the car gets warm the smoke stops so its more than likely ring/bore problem.
Thats shocking if your cam is worn, how long have you had it in? Have you got any further with solving the blue smoke issue? I'll catch you on MSN at some point this week. I haven't been on in ages.

I think the wiper is too big Jimbo. I like the original one. I'll get one from a scrappy soon
Its for balancing purposes mate. I'm pretty impressed with how Mark sets about doing stuff. No corner cutting at all and he takes pride in what he does. Funny the other week when i went down though and he said
"Dave, i've been reading up on this engine building malarky, its pretty interesting stuff"
Right wind up merchant

Hi Phil
Yeah i managed to get back but there was a bad accident on the M60, was gridlocked for around an hour. Bumper is stored in the garage atm but i'll get to work on it over christmas.
Car looks nice but its smoking badly. Can't believe it cos when i came through to yours it was perfect. Engine was quiet as too so i'm a bit annoyed with it atm.
Mark Ford has some green stripes for sale i believe mate, D20RST. Check parts for sale section. I've got some but they're crap.

Following on from the pics taken the other day and road test to see if the car smoked when hot i've decided to remove the head.
I changed the stem seals last weekend hoping that would cure the blue smoke problem, but it didn't. For those who don't know, i start the car from cold, after half a minute blue smoke starts to come out of the exhaust. It usually lasts for around 5 mins until the engine starts warming up then stops. Another problem i'd also noticed was that the car was using a fair bit of water and i'd also lost some power
So, the head came off this afternoon. Nothing really stood out as being broken, pistons were carboned up a bit but nowt a clean wouldn't sort out as i'd expect on an egine thats only covered 16,000 miles.
Few pics of cleaned pistons, block face
I wiped the grubby smear off No2 eventually and then checked the condition of the bores.
Each piston moves slightly when at the top of the bore but its nothing i'm too concerned about as this motor will be replaced in the near future anyhow. I checked the clearances with the feeler blades and the gaps were all roughly the same. The only thing i did find was the slight scoring to the third cylinder. Again though i'm not too worried about this. I carried out a compression test last sunday with that cylinder producing 150psi which i'm happy with.
A couple of pics of the scratching/scoring
Bit blurred
I could possibly have removed the pistons to check the rings but i didn't see the point. It may be something i do when the new engine is in but i'll see nearer the time.
I checked the head for warpage but no probs there either. I cleaned out the combustion chambers and decided to put it back together.
Block with new headgasket
Head back on with bolts finger tight
Head back on clean and torqued down properly
Rocker cover and inlet refitted
So i decided to give the turbo a once over and see if i could find owt wrong there, the trusty old T2
First off i checked the shaft. Minimal play found here, less than 1mm. Happy with that after a conversation with Turbo Technics earlier in the week. I removed the oil return and no problem found here either, gave it a quick clean, as you do, came to refit it it and oh dear. Noticed a tar like sludge around the bottom of the turbo.
If you look to the left of where the oil return pipe goes you can see the black fried oil on the housing.
Not right happy really considering its been fed on castol rs and mobil one all its short life.
I'll get it all cleaned off tomorrow and take it from there.

if oil is getting past the seals it could be due to less back pressure in the exhaust system, poopr build on the turbo, or really high oil pressure.
get the turbo off and clean it up, pop it back on and drive it for couple of days and see what happens

That/they look like fairly substantial scores in the bore, so it's interesting that you still have good high, even compression
Bummer to see the turbo like that though...is this what we expected though? Ragging the T2 on big boost and seeing how long it lasted, or was that the old one? Perhaps, since the engine/car are just about back together again and ready to run, it might be worth dropping to boost right off to 8psi or so and seeing if it'll drive smokelessly. Won't take any time or money to do, and will keep the car driveable till the new engine is born, possibly? If it's a pressure thing then perhaps it will seal okay with lower boost

Yeah as above, we all know 15lb kills a T2 in no time flat, I'm suprised its lasted this long
As the seals work on a pressure differential, back off the boost as James said.

If the exhaust manifold was not seated properly on the head or the exhaust pipe seal around the turbo was also loose would this cause a pressure problem?
Its a strange one James, once warm there is no smoke at all blue or white and the car dosen't feel sluggish, just not as quick as it did. I got my younger bro to road test it by caining it up and down a private test track, no smoke at all.
This is the same turbo/engine i used at Bruntingthorpe so its had some hammer, maybe the 15psi has taken its toll, but its still producing 15psi of boost and holding 13/12. So i dunno

It only really dawned on me recently that this is the T2 that's been taking all the grief, so it's not a surprise at all really, which is a relief! Takes the mystery out of it all for me anyway!
So when ar kid took it out, was that today/recently with the boost wound down? I can't really see the exhaust seals you mentioned causing issues like this, I think it's just been pushed too far and no doubt over-worked.

Sunday James. Theres no smoke when its warm and being booted just on idle when cold.
I'll shine the torch down the exhaust downpipe when i get it. Suppose that will back up the turbo theory.
Ar kid don't think there's owt wrong with it power wise, he drives a ST fiesta though

I spent friday morning cleaning up the turbo ready for refitting. I scraped all of the oily crap off the bottom and refitted the return pipe.
Also fitted a new exhaust manifold gasket and nuts.
The exhaust pipe needs refitting but while off i had a look down and there were a couple of runs on the inside of the pipe. As said by James and Mark its looking like the T2 has surrended

In that case, going by the 1mm cut in top boost hose = 1psi pressure drop rule, cut a 3mm slash in your top hose and you'll be reyt

I might just throw the piece of crap in the bin mate. I didn't use it to get to york in and i'll be able to use the ST to go to Marks in this weekend so jobs a good un.
Suppose i could send it off to TT to confirm its health. Depends on cost though. Obviously there's postage but not sure how much TT would chrage for checking it over.
Will ring them in a bit

a mate of mine sent his turbo to TT and i dont think it cost him anything to have it checked, it might of cost postage there and back but to him it was worth risk, but he got a recon one from another place and just sent his turbo (that came back stripped) to them and got a exchange one.

IIRC TT collect turbo's for free, give them a bell, I'm sure they wouldn't collect, inspect and return a turbo for return postage only

no i beilve my mate paid postage to and from them, all they done was strip it, inspect it and send it back.
from what he told me they might of had the thought they were going to be fixing it, hence the no charge, but on the other hand, being as big as they are, maybe they do offer free inspection as most will say, "oh if its focked can you fix it" so they make money, a case of they win some they loose some, mose cases being won though.
the place my mate got his turbo from in the end seemed ok, so i got a recon one from them for a black frst i had, tbh IMO, i should of paid a bit more and got it from somewhere else, and after a while my mate thought the same, but thats a different sorty

Now I think about it some more, they did collect the turbo FOC. It went to them for a new wastegate lever arm and to extract a sheared bolt from the exhaust housing. While it was their they told me my compressor wheel was "buggered". I notice every single one of the tips of the compressor blades was very midly deformed. No play in the shaft AT all, still, it still makes boost and doesn't make noises or contact the housing, so before sending it to them I quickly came to the conclusion that it was fine. So to hear someone describe it as being "buggered" was annoying, offensive and OTT, and possibly a way of trying to make someone think they needed work doing since they were on the other end of the phone. I'm just glad I inspected it myself before accepting their judgement and paying more!

thats the thing though mate, thats what big companies are like, when i rebuilt my turbo my self, the circlip thast holds the compressor housing wasnt on right and it would boost, took it off and you could see where the compressore wheel blades had make contact but only a little bit, fitted it back together and put it back on, boosted fine.
but if they rebuild it and the compressor wheel broke up you would be on the phone giveng them cr@p as "there" rebuilt turbo just spat metal throught your induction pipes
, so thats prob how they look at it, but at the end of the day, unless its gunna make contact with something again, its not gunna break.
but on the other hand, what were they doing stripping the compressor side when your problems were exhaust side... maybe it was a free inspection, and i bet you got the same compressor wheel back

Had a similar experience with the Turbo Centre in Dewsbury James with that Hybrid T2 i gave to Rawli. I didn't know what i was looking for but the shaft had severe play in it, was wobbly and the main oil seal was dead.
I took it through to them, they dismantled it and told me all sorts. They gave me it back in bits but didn't charge me anything for the inspection. That turbo was dead though.
The one on the car atm is still alive, albeit barely it seems but i don't want it returning to me in pieces. It can still make emergency journeys if needs be i suppose but imo i don't think its too bad. I really don't want to be spending anything more on this engine now, just on some fresh oil.
Anyway i've just been on the phone to TT and got told off in a nice way
I've basically run too much boost through it for starters anyhow. I've described all the symptoms to the bloke and he's ruled out thrust bearing so thats good. Says i've possibly blown the main seal or the oil drain pipe has not been fitted correctly. Also the breather system is pants but it would tend to smoke all the time if this had gone.
Now for the costs involved.
Inspections ain't done for free anymore. You have to pay an initial £25 to cover carraige and the report they do. Then obviously everything else is on top.
For the seals doing and rebuilding of the unit its £195+vat. As i'm running high boost i was also told the standard bearing and compressor wheel would be under severe stress. Price for the 360 thrust bearing is 80+vat.
Cost is building up nicely here
I didn't ask for the price of the compressor wheel, just made a comment saying i may as well buy a brand new hybrid unit, which i won't be doing of course.
So there you go. My conclusion, the T2 is an expensive pile of papp
Seriously though if i was to go the T2 route again i would bite the bullet and buy a hybrid. The standard turbo is ok for what its supposed to produce, standard power. You might get lucky like greg has and get 150,000 mile out of it but thats a one off.
Can't wait till i get the new GT now. Bye bye T series

well as ya say mate the T2 is good for what its ment for, the max raly to be run on a T2 should be 10 maybe 12 at a push but anything more a bigger/hybrid turbo is needed.
dont bin ya old one though, someone might have it.
i might even have, i got 2 duffers in the shed, might be able to make a good one out of them
