Postby rsfiestaturbo on Thu Apr 28, 2011 10:34 pm

hiya all im new to this site ive owned my rs now for about a week and loved it but have a problem if some1 can help me. car is one of the best left had £15k spent on it. recently just had rebuild couple k miles its also had new plugs leads and coil and new sump oil and timeing belt. and its started to make a tapping noise and it seaming to get louder, it is 230bhp i always let it go down to 30 psi oil pressure before i drive off and not rag it at all and makes like a small slow tap and as i speed up it gets louder and faster and dosnt go away at all. i drained the oil and got the best oil for it motul 300v 15w50 as the chap said he was puttin in mobile 15w50 in cause of bhp i read bottle of mobile and said for modern cars i thought hey this isnt modern but nvm got that oil and it is still tapping bad, im worried of breaking her. as she is 1 of the many left. it has piper cam on it too and dosnt look very old at all... any1 could possible help?
thank's :D

nice to see adam car on this site again :Q

sounds like it could be a tappet, its seen as normal for a CVH to tap as the tappets alweays seem to start after a while, although it might be worth popping them out and checking them for signs of wear or damage.
a new set might sort the prob, although a lot of people will say dont use new tappets on a old cam.... you can though

wow thanks for the guide took awile go through it and yes it was adam's car ur right lol its in still mint condition and not even a ding on the wheeles. it bin stored mostly. didnt know it won fast ford and in mag. chuffed of that i brought it too look after her anyway. i know there is many rs turbos which have bin transferd and not many anymore. it dosnt do it all the time the tapping i was thinking if a boilt could be loose i will investigate more. see if i can find the solution nice to be with the rs famiy =D...
moggy it is loud in low rev higher rev it gets quiter and faster then disapears in like 4k revs then change gear starts over but told it has racing clutch n that fitted and im driving it like normal use speed. also i let it go down from 100 oil pressure too 35 too drive it on ford clocks... dont want to brake her as there must be something banging to make a tap...
sorry about the last thread too chaps needed replys lol =]....

im on the isle of wight mate

is the tap deffo metalic tapping?
could be a exhaust blow?

reason i say that, on another thread the guys got a tapping but has found a blow on the manifold gasket, i didnt give that a thought to start with, but its just sprung to mind this morning.

what your have to do is check everything you can, and report back your findings, check alternaotr, water pump wtc, anything that moves that could cause it, look for signs of touching or rubbing, i.e, have a look to see if the alternator cooling blades are not rubbing on anything when the engine moves, could be a sign of a naffed engine mount etc

so yeah, check over everything and report back, i would pop the rocker cover off check all rocker arm nuts are tight and take a tappet out 1 at a time and check the base for sign of damage or wear, if you have a spare blanking plug and want to do it, you could pop the cam out and inspect it for any signs of damage or wear also, but your have to do all the donky work while we sit here saying it could be this that etc, many times ive replied to somethign saying, its "blah" oir that sound like "blah" is fcuked, to be told its been checked or its new, or its not that, then few weeks later after money has been spent on other stuff, they reply back saying it was in fact, what i said first time round  and this isnt just me, its happened to others that reply too.

not saying your like this though fella, but im just making a point of saying, start with the obvious things its likly to be for the sound, then work back, in the case of a CVH engine, the cam and more so tappets would be the first thing people would say tap's on a cvh engine. so thats why i said tappets first off.
how ever, a knocking end has gievn the sound of a top end rattle before, way to check this is long screw drive, put the end on different points of the engine and parts (mind the moving parts and belts) and yuor ear on the handle, any noise in the engine will transmit up the screw driver and your hear it, and more importantly, can localise the noise, left hand, right hand, bottom end, top end, water pump etc etc

and checking dont cost nothing but time :)

if it seems to be gettign worse, stop driving it mate, if tappet or the cam is wearing it will get worse, so you gotta check it over mate.

would of been fast ford or performance ford

no offence, but tappets, lifters, and follows as there also called are indeed the same thing, so for the mechanic to say you need lifters and tappets would say to me hes made a mistake i.e confussed, or he just dont know what hes talking about........

did he take anything apart to check anything?

10w-40 is the std grade really, but it aint gunna stop the tappet noise (if it is the tappets) so again, leads me to belive he dunno wtf hes on about

lol no he just took the oil cap off looked in and reved it to about 4k revs holded it for like 1 min. hes done lots of work to cars and bin merchanic for like 20 years but he naffed up my step dads car last time lol i told him about the tapping first he said these always do it its normal then went bck said its tapping more and more and it needs doing. then he did like i said above and tells me to get some lifter's tappets and rocket cover. even though car is great car for what it has won and bin through. its costing me loads and i aint even done much in it.. i brought the car fair deal price £2200 7 - 8 days ago now and it has already cost me £350 now i gotta splash out on this... and i just ent out in it and the dame clip to the door handle has flew off looks like the last owners clued it on as there is abit clue... great.... i sorted the suspention out too cause one the bck was all way down as it still has that adjustable suspention now it dosnt go side to side in powerband i leveled them straight the back suspention. and sorted the front.. if i knew how to replace the tappets myself i would is it hard or easy cause i need to learn anyway.. anywhere i could get info u think? or haynes is best trick... lol thanks for all ur help btw..

plenty og gear knobs that will fit the fiesta mate.

the haynes manual for the mk3 fiesta (book number 1595) covers all models inc the FRST, it just doesnt cover diesels.

plenty on ebay cheaper than halfords though

this ones a bargain considering it inc free postage! which is gunna cost them about £4

thats fair enough if you need it right away.
as for the old oil, dont bother, and why are you doing a engine flush anyway? if the tappets are worn, there worn, flushing and putting the original oil back in isnt going to solve anything.
i wouldnt reuse used engine no matter what, as for the "new" oil you have in your engine, i personally wouldnt reuse it, but if you plan to then i would at least tip it into a magnet bowl or something, then filter it through something before putting it back in to be on the safe side

tappet wise, unless the tappets are solid they dont come loose, hydraulic dont, and thats whats prob fitted, unless you have a newmans cam with there tappets, then theres are solid, but hydraulic , you put them in and they do the rest, so as i said, if there worn, there worn, nothing you can do about it, thicker oil might shut them up a bit, but thats it really.

have you had anything off and checked yet? pulled tappets out and cam?

a new merchanic today said he used to work on these and brand new ones and he says i garentee you 90% it is the sump oil filter blocked so it isnt suckin the oil to top end cause it is blocked he said take sump off and burn it no need to put a hole in it just burn it, to take tappets out myself dont i need a torque spanner i dont know what tention torqe to tighten them bck up and dont know which way i was told u need to tightin them up different places and different torq anywhere i could find a guide? dosnt say in the haynes just says to check to see if worn and rocker arms. to burn the sump filter i bet that would smoke some though think best clean then burn it. i will get the sump off but i just hope i can with out takin exhaust off which i doubt by the looks of it... actually i just looked and it dosnt look so easy to take sump off. he said he's know to the sump pipe get bloked on these number of times and it can even cause naff up engine completly.. u think he has a gd case? oil what is init looks brand new still on stick was only done like couple miles with it in. i could put it bck in its original tin. just waitin for engine kool down abit.

not meaning to offend, but who ever told you to burn the sump filer sounds like a complete w***er! and whats this about no need to put a hole in it, a hole in what :aaah:

its not a filter anyway, its the oil pick up pipe with a strainer, (wire mesh) and they can be cleaned easy enough.
yes, they can become blocked by particals of crap such as bits of gasket, poor sevicing leading to lumps of manky oil sludge etc, but if he really knows these engine like he claims, then he should know that the CVH engine sufferes from poor oil delivery to the head on the right side, in most cases it doesnt case a problem but it is a known floor with the engine, but based on what hes said to you so far, i would say he dont know the engine as well as he likes to think.

anyway, dont burn nothing, heat causes metal to expand, and can warp it, so burning it is deffo a no no, plus your be there forever trying to remove all the burn on deposits, and your never get to all of whats there, thats for sure.
oh, and yes, if the strainer got blocked, oil pressure would fall and lead to oil starvation to the engine, and yeah, it will start scoring things up and in the end sieze up, but your know about that if it was happening!

moving on though, you dont need a torque wrench to take the rockers off, but to tighten them you will, and you can get one that will do the job from argos.
and ther aynes manula does have the torque settings in there, look at chaper 2, page 2b.2
you do one at a time, theres no order to tightening them.

as fro a guide, if you look in the guides room you would find my guide

guide-to-replacing-the-cam-and-tappets-on-a-cvh-engine-vt156199/

oil wise, if yuor happy to reuse it mate, then thats your call fella.

back onto the problem though, removing thew sump isnt a quick easy job, depending on where you exhaust connects to the down pipe depends if tis gunna have toi come off, if you had a T2 then you remove the down pipe and its fine, your likly to have a T3 on it based on the spec, and depending how the ehaust is depends on whats gotta come off, but remember, if you dont do the gasket right when refitting, its gunna leak!

besides, unless you know the problem is bottom end related i wouldnt touch the sump yet, as i said before, get the tappets and the cam out and see whats going on there.
and the thing with tappets you wanna bear in mind, they dont always show external wear when they wear, its mainly internal which you cant check.....

if you wanna try and narrow down where this noise is coming from, get a long screw driver or bit or metal, stick one end on different points of the engine (carfull round moving parts) and then put it onto your ear, your localise the noise this way

yeah its defo tappett's and im so gutted i took his work so called merchanic who is in his 60's and spost worked on these maybe it was 1 of them before like u said bad merchainc and bits when served had to remove turbo exhaust starter motor and alternator lol guess what clean as a whisle nah i gotta scrape rubber off and make sure it is spotliss just done that now jet washed it the pan and now its on radiator drying.. so hopefully when i get it all back on tommorow i will flip roker off i got new gasket and rubber lube to seal better looks like the person before put too much lube on it... i brought a torque rench and splashed out on some decent tools from halfords.. fantastic quility really £199 professional 150 peace set but u can get it right now for £99.99 £100 off... i started to think now i couldnt replace filter when did oil change i did otherday didnt have the tool to get it off and still dont and the oil is black again surprised... could this filter cause any loss oil above??? i did buy a filter but the one on it looks quite new... my last car i was able get to it easy and use my hand's... i was shocked how black the oil was too like the oil was before refresh... the merchanic said he could of done this for me for £100 i hear where tappets are tapping each side do u think i should get the full set?? i wont need rocker arms will i? sorry about all the question's lol chap said to me today it got piper cam on it and these can make it noisey.. also i gotta do sumit about that gear stick its so low and 5th is stupid get in to it have to learn forward lol how r u btw jay...

im good cheers mate, same old crap day in day out

for what a oil filter cost bung a new one on, if you havent to a strap tool, then you can punch a screw driver through it to undo it, but its messy, and ive had a real stubbon one before and it destroyed the filter to the point i have to get a chisle on it to get it to undo, so might be worth getting a strap tool
them halford tools are really good, and they come with a lift time warranty too so well worth the cost even at full price, but half the price is a proper bargain imo.

if your gunna put new tappets in, do a full set, dont be tempted by cheap nasty one though, and fords, well, there be stupid money, i think there like £15 each from ford or something.

what do you mean by can the fileter cause loss of oil?

yeah if you had a blocked oil filter that could lead to big problems.

i dunno if i said i use 10w-40 or not, but if i did, i must correct my self, i use 5w-40 as i looked at the oil tub in the shed, i will deffo be going back to 10w-40 though.

if yuor happy to carry on using the oil your using stick with it mate, but check out the grades and pick what will suit your needs.

if oil is coming out of exhaust pipe then your cylinder bores are worn or the piston rings are letting the oil past and its getting thrown straight out the back.
