Decent tyre stretch
What size tire should i be looking at for 15" alloys, and also giving it a decent stretch ?

Re: Decent tyre stretch
if it has a 195 tyre on it a 165 is a decent stretch
, ive seen 185's but they only look slightly stretched.

Re: Decent tyre stretch
Just fit 195/45/15's.
Falken FE-512's look quite stretchy. You need the 195 tyres for grip really. if you want the stretched look get 8J wheels.

WHY DO PEOPLE STRETCH TYRES!
if it was 100% safe then the tyre manufactures would not offer so much choice in width, why remotely risk your own or someone elses safety for the sake of being a sheep and having a llo that exerts undue stress on the beeding area of the tyre

Re: Decent tyre stretch
thats more the rim protectors designed into the tyre side wall that is givving the impression of a slight stretch, alot of 'performance' or higher end tyres have them and make the tyres look stretched when they really arent.

Yea i know, But still for a 7J wheel i think the norm is 205. The falkens just have a slim side wall so look quite stretchy.

195/45/15's. I can't iterate enough how daft stretching tyres is. My father has in excess of 30years experience in tyre research and I can't repeat what he said about the stupidity of it (darn swear filter).

Re: Decent tyre stretch
You can, the swear filter is optional on the part of the reader.
It does strike me as being thoroughly stupid and the only POSSIBLE reason I can think of for doing it is if you've fitted alloys that are just too wide for the arches...

He has an opinon, you have an opinion, I have opinion. We all have the freedom to express those opinions without hinderance - as for "let them do it", if they want to make a styling decisions (that may have dangerous repercussions) then they will do whatever suits them best - we're all allowed to have opinions on that too, though.

Do you have understandings of sresses and the problems that materials can experiance if they are subject to cyclic loading of undue stresses on them? poss not if you posted that comment!
If you like your car to be a possible timebomb then that most certainly is indeed your own choice but one that i do not take a very bright view on when it could possibly be other INOCENT peoples safety that is put at risk when the tyre comes away from the rim of bursts doing 70 + on a motorway..... Think of the consequences of that if the worst were to happen and the view that the crash inspectors would have from a practise that is not 100% safe! Put it this way you would be torn a new arse hole in court at the very least!
People should think of what could come of things before doing them!
EDIT - and if you dont like my opinion then thats your problem, as said its a public forum where anyone can post an opinion or view on a matter if its what is wanted to be heard or not!

Exactly.
If somebody suggests running with only one wheel nut per wheel to save weight should we all stay silent and keep our opinions to ourselves. I had a lad on another car forum announce he had made 6mm alloy wheel spacer for his car from plywood! Definately not a good idea to stay quiet.

That, imo, looks bloomin' awful.
Agreed, looks terrible reminds me of a granny's swolen ankle!
Regarding the stretching thing dawsfezzie, yes its his choice to put a poor choice of tyre on his wheel for good looks but it's also his duty to ensure his car is safe on the road, which he isn't by doing this, which by my reconing is quite selfish and the other 'opinions' are more than justified.

The tyre stretch on that Saxo looks terrible. Just looks like the poor bloke couldn't afford the right tyres... And yes I'd aggree that kind of stretch in the pic is probably quite dangerous

Re: Decent tyre stretch
ive yet to hear of any accidents happening due to stretched tyres ?,
that saxo now belongs to my friend and i do believe stretched tyres look awesome on some cars..
the guy asked a simple question, can he not just get a simple answer..
maybe we should go back to the whole..
(30mm drop, mondeo alloys , colour coded mk3.5 mirrors) jesus these boards rarely change)
if you wish to rant about safety and modifying cars do you really think that lowering your car dosent put extra stress on ball joints, they can pop off u no . Or what about.. well i wont go on.

good effort mate!! exactly what i was thinking, like i say people on here at the min jumps at the chance to give them a debriefing, if they do anything from the norm! seems breaking the boundries and other mods are out of the question! anyways [ERRR] just leave them to it!

Yes extra stress is put on the ball joint when lowering a car, HOWEVER the extra stress is negligable and well within the safety factor alloted for the components involved. As for ball joints poping off.. i take it you are refering to the ball popping out of the socket not the stub comming out of the hub as if that were the case that the stub has come out of the hub then the retaining bolt was either faulty and sheared or not done up to correct torque. If ball joints do pop out of their socket then it means that the car is VERY poorly maintained and that there is VERY EXCESSIVE wear in the balljoint that is not withing said limits of wear or play for mot test at very least.
As for tyres comming away from rim, im sure that Rawli on here has had a tyre that was stretched come away from the rim doing a low speed, which is very very lucky to happen at low speeds as control of the car would be easy compaired to motorway speeds.
Im all for individuallity, however not when it is putting lives at risk, stretching a tyre can potentially be very dangerous if anything were to happen and just as it can be dangerous as cutting suspension springs can be if that method is used to lower a car rather than buy suitable lowering springs! Products are designed for a reason other than just filling a hole in the market, and the companies have R&D departments for a reason in the case of tyres if one size really did all then why would maufactures and car makers go to the trouble of developing and testing different sizes and not just stretch the tyres to begin with, in turn making the tyres alot cheaper due to higher demand for the size bringing manufacturing costs per unit down.
As said, if you dont like the opinions on a public forum then dont read the posts. I know it can seem like alot of people just slate others opinions or certain mods but some of the time it is a genuine concer that someone is doing something that will put themself or others at risk and wish to point out that fact.
If it seams like the same opinion is being voiced time and time again then it is because the user is not searching for the topic that has already been discussed and just posting the same thing time and time again. Perhaps that would help in changing the views that certain members are "jumps at the chance to give them a debriefing, if they do anything from the norm!"

Re: Decent tyre stretch
lol. Thanks for the interest guys, and i didn't mean to cause any arguments. I just posted back to say that i know the dangers of excessive tyre stretching and i wasn't planning on doing anything like the pic, even though i think it can look awesome on the right cars. The reason i wanted to put a little bit of stretch on the tire, is so that it "appears" that the rim is coming further out of the arch than it does, as this would help me achieve the wide look, to a certain extent. Also i will be lowering the car 60mm and i wasn't sure how well the rims would fit under the arches so i was making sure that they did, and i wouldn't buy a product which i would have to re-sell. Finally the dangers would not affect me as much, as my car is only a 1.3 so it wont be travelling as fast and this doubled with the fact i will only be stretching them a small amount does put it at less likely i will be endangering anyone else. One again i am sorry for bringing up a sensitive topic.
Cheers
