Clio 2ltr 16v T3 Turbo Project Pictures

Postby Red16 on Thu May 29, 2003 6:57 pm

Just started making an exhaust manifold tonight, still early days but u can get an idea of what it'll look like.
Pieces of pre-bent pipework welded together, could be useful for the zetec turbo people to make their own free flowing manifold!

Got a stage 3 hybrid t3, 2 ltr 16v williams engine, renault 21 turbo management, 10 row oil cooler, frontera intercooler (5ltr estimate)

Busy saving for some JE low comp pistons from america and uprated rods n bolts

Manifold is just about complete now :D couple of runs of weld still needed

Image
fitted rather nicely i think :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

another WOW it fits angle  :Q :D

:o thats going to shift when finished! What gearbox are you going to use? I know it sounds a stupid question but I fancy getting my Willie turboed at some point in time and I worry about the other parts of the Clio handling the power. Willie gearboxes seem to not even like 150bhp. :)

cheers chum, was the best one that would allow the turbo to be mounted as close as possible to the engine, as space is tight between engine and bulkhead! :oooh: should flow rather well i think :)

Red16 have u not tried alternative locations for the turbo?? Am i right in saying it'll be right infront of the engine just behind the slampanel?

:oooh: oh well, if theyre 65 quid i'll find a scrappa cos i only want the to flange which bolts to the exhaust elbow on the turbo.

nah chum, the turbo will be sitting on the otherside of the engine (opposite to a zetec engine), so its trapped up against the bulkhead, which may need persuading back a little

I see you didn't go for equal length manifold pipes was the reason for this space?

yeah the reason was purely space (lack of it), design should still allow decent flow through manifold, hopefully

With a T3 I can see there being some lag but a tremendious smack of power delivered :)

What pistons etc are you puttin in it?

Is it all going back in a clio? it will certainly shift if you can set it up right :)

yeah its going back into a clio, the red one in my signature.

think im gonna go for some JE low comp forged pistons custom made from america, unless i find somewhere else who can do good pistons in the uk!

want to lower the compression to 7.5-8:1 not sure exactly what comp ratio i should be running, probably be running around 15-20psi boost, i think the intercooler will need upgrading before this can be ran tho!

The compression ration of a 5 turbo is 7.9 to 1 so sounds like your on the right road.

It will be awesome when its done, a 5 engine in a clio shifts, so this is going to fly :D

why are you showing this on a fiesta board, do you own a FRST as well?

Dave :)

i ask for all my advice on this board (i know its a fiesta board but...) i used to have a moondust turbo and this is THE BEST board ive used for technical knowledge and advice, love it! :D

also i wanted to show the people im asking advice from that im not wasting their time asking silly questions, i am seriously trying to build a 16v turbo, just not a zetec!

M8 - maybe you would be beter off having stragiht pipe for cylinders 2+3, I coudl see the curved pieces a bit of a nightmare to join to the collector. :D

straight pieces would be too far apart to join into the collector with any decent kind of flow characteristics, which is why i chose the elbows in the picture, as they direct the air towards the collector hole.

that said, its gonna be tricky merging all the pipework into a nice collector :aaah: lol

can try it this way n if it fails, have another go with another method, i got plenty time til i can afford pistons n rods :(

just to put a point forward the plate your using for the turbo mount may distort when its welded due to the extreame heat you'll need to get a decent weld, then you'll need to get it skimmed flat and it'll be very thin and then distort from the heat of the turbo. good luck with the project i'm doing a turbo rsi using the volvo 440 turbo engine can't belive the way these clio's handle when lowered and on decent sized rubber :)

crazy dave you crazy mo fo...I am comming up your neck of the woods next week. We might need your expert welding assistance if your about. Can you bring the equipment you and Mr T from the A team use and bring it over to Ian's one evening next week? :Q

Thanks - Sunny.
Do you have any idea what 178.8mph feels like in a Fiesta? 2000 lb of pressure per square inch per second pushing back on your face. It feels like god himself is trying to rip the skin off your skull while someone lands a 747 on your chest.

crazy dave, already thought about that problem, gonna bolt the plate to a goosed turbo i got while i weld it so it doesnt distort, plus its made of 10mm plate so should be pretty sturdy

been doing a bit more of the manifold today and the pipe on the right hand side needs to be slightly modified from the origijnal plan as the turbo catches on it when bolted up :( just a slight hurdle tho

M8 seeing as you can weld proficiently I'd personally see if you could pick up a Volvo or Saab wastegate housing - this way you can runa 3" bore straight from the turbo with a little bit of modification 8)

Oh yeah - get some more pics up, interesting viewing :D
