Project Scort, V6 twin turbo. 'Rollin, Rollin' 30-12-07!!

Postby Captain Tightpants on Fri Mar 25, 2005 1:03 am

Well, some of you may or may not know my plans.

Initially I was planning on a Zetec Turbo build. My mind was changed by a recent complete fcuk up with a well known american supplier of Zetec parts.

My eScort as she is at the moment:

Image

Image

Image

My pistons arrived earlier today, and I'm a little excited now! Thats why I'm writing this post I suppose!

Image

Nice pretty box, and inside:

Image

Now, you may notice that there seem to be six pistons. You may, or may not begin to see where this is going!

I will give you a couple more clues:

Image

A pair of 28R's with ceramic impellars help at all?

Image

Well maybe a noble intercooler will help! Now thats got to be a big clue!

Image

The offending new engine.

Looking to start fitting the engine into my poor escort in the next couple of months. Got to finish the Ka pretty soon, will update that post after easter! I will be using the MTX75 gearbox, which is unique to the V6.

Really looking forward to getting started! :D

Oh, nearly forgot,

Look what came with the piston rings!! :D

Image
Sweeeet! :)

Comments welcome,

Steve

My god! Good luck with it... Going to be watching this topic :)

Has the Duratec V6 been turbo'd before? Let alone twin-turbo'd?!

They do it in the US mate, usually using one big turbo though.

Interestingly they have run them up to 400bhp, on standard rods! :o

I'm planning on this engine being a fairly basic setup, then develop it once proven.

I believe, there are a couple of turbo'd mondeos in the UK, using a stock engine though.

Steve,

Be careful with the water pump and oil pump - the early V6 internals used plastic impellers in the water pump and can fail causing major problems if left unchecked. I'd replace the vacuum hoses on the top as the engine will run like a bag of bolts up to 3250rpm - the second bank of valves are vacuum operated, the car runs on 12 valves up until 3250rpm when the vacuum opens up the other 12 valves. The vacuum hoses crack with time and so the vacuum doesn't cut in, meaning the car runs like a bag under 3250rpm.

Sorry - just pointing out the problems I had with one when I had a Mondeo V6 last year (lasted 2 weeks before the engine died - had serious internal damage by previous owner, did me up a kipper!).

The Noble M12 and all the variants use the Mondeo engine - but they use overbored ones now, the original M12 GTO used the 2.5 V6 with twin turbo setup.

I think Jeremey Clarkson said the engine sounded something like 'Darth Vader on speed' or something like that - will be bloody mental!

One thing I must say though - I noticed with the Mondeo the car was incredibly nose heavy - won't it give tremendous understeer sticking that big engine in the Escort if you're running the front wheels? I just think it might be a bit cack to drive on the road unless you're mounting it in the back and running rwd or 4wd?

I'll certainly be watching this project with interest - please post up loads of pics as I like a good read with my cup of tea :)

Cheers,

Andy

Andy,

Your correct. I am planning one of two things in regards to the water pump:

1, Replace with steel internals, readily available and cheap!
2, Replace entire water pump with electric one. Readily available from the states, but expensive!!

Oil pump will be replace with an uprated item upon rebuild.

I'm planning on not using the secondarys at all. I am only going to be using the LIM, and not the UIM, so I would not gain much, as all the runners will be of equal length.

I have noticed that with most mondeos. Its something I have been concerned about to be honest. I am going to weigh the engine as a matter of interest. The engine itself is alloy, so hopefully saved a bit of weight there.

The whole front suspension is adjustable now. I have an RS1600i alloy front crossmember, and I will be fitting a quaiffe LSD. I'm 'hoping' with some decent suspension setup, it will be ok. I'm tring to buy a set of road legal slicks atm so that should help. Plus she is only ever out in the sun!

I'm going to try and avoid 4wd or rwd as much as possible. I want to be in the FWD class. The moment I go rwd or 4wd, there are some serious monsters out there! :o

I'm trying to step out of the circle a bit with this one. Nobody to my knowledge has put a v6 in the front of an escort, let alone a turbo'd one. Someone has to do it though, just as well be me!

I seriously can't wait for the noise though! Its gonna be awsome!

Thanks for your input though mate, most welcomed.

Cool - glad that you'd thought it through (I kinda guessed I was teaching Grandma to suck eggs - not that I'm calling you a Grandma mind! ) :)

I've not seen a project quite like this one - glad to see you've got it all covered, might be worth checking the timing chain for slack as well (listen out for a noisy growl on startup - if it stays for a while until the oil is up to pressure then you've either got a problem with the oil fed chain adjusters or there's a serious lack of oil pressure). I know about this problem because I found after a week of driving the car that the engine had an oil pressure problem that didn't show itself until the old thick oil they'd put in had been drained out when I serviced the car!

I ran new oil in and then noticed the engine start tapping! Upon dropping the new oil out I found half the internals of the engine come out with it (amazingly the engine still ran!).

I suppose the best advice is vigilance with those engines - it has knocked my confidence of ever buying another car with one of those engines again even though it looks like it was neglect rather than poor design that caused my problems (and my own stupidity at being conned so royally!).

Good points with the fwd class thing - so you're building this machine for the quarter mile? Are you hoping to enter into events like Redline's Ten of the best?

I've not seen any other Escort with that engine in - the Mondeo, Cougar and Noble are the only cars I know of that come with them as standard!

It's a shame you didn't tell me about this project before, I recently binned a load of spares from the V6 lump!

Andy,

Sounds like you were stitched up mate. Bummer. To be honest the only experience I have had with these engines up to now, is a friends ST24.

The engine is being completely rebuilt anyway, with an overbore, to suit the pistons. Bit gutting about having to run it in though!

I'm planning to take her up the strip a few times mate, should be very competetive, the torque figure should be pretty impressive.

That is typical, spare parts are always usefull!

Rawli,

The 2.5 in NA form, shouldn't be foo difficult to put into a fiesta, it would certainly go well! The main problems I would see as being the gearbox, and driveshafts. Unfortunately the duratec lump only fits onto a special type of MTX75 box, due to the starter mounting.

You planning it?

Pretty sure, but its gonna take some fairly serious fabrication work in the engine bay.

One good way to find out though!

Will be hard to mount the bonnet hinges back on that thing!

Nobody better mention chassis flex in that workshop either  (I see the strengthening brace at the bottom but I hope they're going to do something similar at the top!).

Looks mental though - the Escort Mk4 shell should afford you quite a bit more room though Scort :D

I think that guy is going to do it in a different shell anyway, as that has seen better days.

I think there's someone else doing one in a mk2, but in the rear, and i'm sure there's another one too!

:o :o Sweet!

Thats exactly my plan, I have a scrap XR3i Shell, the engine will be mounted in that first, so that I can fabricate the mounts, and work out exactly where the shell needs to be modified.

Good efforts!

Top man! :Q

That is going to be one hell of a car. Erm. Assuming you get rubber that will put the power down, won't the front steering be a little sluggish? I mean if you end up running 7 or 8 inch wide rubber on the front, your steering is going to be rather stressed!

But that should be a hell of a motor.... :oooh:

MotorcyclesFish,

LOL @ You loon!

This was one my main concerns while dreaming up this masterplan. I have aquired a Mk5 Escort Si. I will be using the steering rack from this car, to retrofit PAS.

Rawli,

Unfortunately mate, it would result in some serious work. Main problem being the starter motor location. The lancia starter is located in a fairly 'normal' place,

Image

You can make out the lug for the starter at the lower front.

Image

Check out the starter position on the V6 MTX75. Not a great photograph I agree, but its sat on the top facing onto the engine.

A better option would probably be to use the RS2000 4x4 transfer box and rear axle,

Image

The RS2009 Diff and transfer box would be compatible, with some minor machining.

Unfortunately however, the transfer boxes are meant to be pretty weak. As are the rear diffs, come to that.

TomRS1800,

Do you have any pics mate, love to see them.

Cheers for all the comments guys, any input appreciated, as there may be things I have missed! :aaah:

rs2000 4x4 drivetrain is very poor though, prone to faults and fuckin well expensive when it lets go, hence why i suggested the evo drivetrain in teh first place and not the rs2k ;)

Quite right mate. Think I heard talk a while ago of an RS2000 owner that was going to try using the EVO box.

That said, the EVO gearbox, and transfer box are not without faults. My friend who had the yellow one, I posted about in the General section a while ago, blew his transfer box to bits. Cost him £4500 or something daft.

Plus you would have to use the EVO rear diff, as the RS2000 one that would 'nearly fit' is a completely different ratio.

A good idea, in theory. I don't think I fancy it at the moment yet though. Maybe in Mk2 v6!
