hi everyone i recently brought a 4x4 si mondeo and i am going to fit the 4x4 system with a zetec turbo conversion which i already built onto my mk2 fiesta but i want to know if there is any companys out there that made some kind of a device so that i can switch between 4x4 and rear wheel drive for those days with plenty of dougnuts if you know what i mean :-)

This is not a skyline gear box

it's either one or the other with a bit of engineering work to be done if wanted rwd

Not 100% sure but i bet will involve some sort of machining of fabrication of something

In a nut shell, no!

If you're going Zetec Turbo power the transfer box will soon poo itself. I would look at converting things to RWD for loads of fun and sell teh transfer box for big cash as they are quite sought after.

That doesnt make much sense as the transfer box is what sends the power down to the back!!! You are thinking of an inline engine gearbox!

the bad thing about the 4x4 is that there aint a lot of tourq say if i wanted to do some drifting i need a lot of tourq but i was driving the mondeo yesterday and it doesnt have it, what can i do about that? or am i just imagining things???? :) the mondeo has a very bad handling where my xr2 is like a gokart sticks to the road

cheers for ur answers

Dont worry about torque, The engine makes the torque so if you build your engine to a good spec you'll have plenty of torque to get ya goin!

If you want to go drifting dont go 4wd, The mondeo was never meant to be a handler so dont expect much from it, You may aswell be docking a barge in comparison to a small car such as a xr2!!!

also 4x4 is used for the traction it can give, I'm going with the others on this and saying T5 and cossie axle!!

The transfer box on the Mondeo is set to give a torque bias to the front wheels which isn't good fopr drifting. To be fair I don't think there are any great Fords for drifting. Get an old Capri to play in :D

The transfer boxes are not the same between the Mondeo and the RS2k despite what some literature tells you. I've had this confirmed by a very well known gearbox specialist

which transfer box is better then the other? and also what is a 4x4 system good for? just for handling i would have though and if u are climing mountings hehehe question will i have to build a tunnell if i go for t5 box and cossie axle? another question will my car pass mot if i was to run the exhaust system from the inside of the car to the bak? so that i can run the axle through the exhausts place insted???? thanks for all answers? last but not least where can i find a cossie axle and what other bits will i need any ideas????

well unless ford managed to make some magical device for transferring power to the rear axle without a propshaft then i would have to assume it already has a drive tunnel. it may need some modification to accept the t5 or maybe even mt75 gearbox and the also undoubtably chunkier driveshaft but it shouldnt be a massive problem.

4wd is used to give a regular car bucketloads of traction and corner stability. its not just thrown on as a selling point. also there isnt really one transfer box better than the other. both are typically as hard wearing and strong as chocolate.

what do you mean "run the exhaust system from the inside of the car to the back"? running the actual zorst through the cab of the car is probably not a very good idea and will more than likely be an instant mot fail purely because having a steel tube carrying explosion byproducts through the inside of the car is a massive (and rather insane) safety risk.

by cossie axle i assume everyone means the rear axle used on cosworths IE the escort and sierra. i would peg those as being the most likely sources. or you could go properly lo-tec and use a live axle setup as found on excort mk2's and capri's :D

to put the 4x4 running gear in a mk3 fezza would be an engineering headache as you would need to get the prop shortened or a new one made up [ERRR] the two cars have different wheel bases.

pt sent regarding selling 4x4 running gear.
