guide: polishing the alloy lip

Postby curly on Sat Jul 25, 2009 9:52 am

i baught some alloys for the missus, and they looked abit tatty, so tought ied have a go at making them a bit better and pollish the lip up nicely, as thats where most of the tattyness is. they where origionaly a polished rim, but the laqur had peeled badly where they hadnt been looked after for a long time, and instead of spending £200 on a refurb, i went in to the garage and got the following

clean cloths(x10) 2 for each wheel, and 2 for polishing
sand paper 240g,400g,800g,1000g,1200g,1500g,2000g wet n dry
precision flat headed screw driver,
wire brush,
alloy wheel cleaner
bucket
washin up liquid
alluminium polish

heres the pics of the tatty rims

so as you can see they`re a state, so got at it with the alloy wheel cleaner, got them as clean a physicly possible and then wiped them dry, and got the bucket of water ready with washing up liquid, then started to sand down the lip with 240g wet, to get rid of that laqur, while sanding, i noticed there was a machined lined edge, where they obviously made them, and it looked rubbish, so just sanded through it, once got its all smooth and laqur was non existant, i cleaned it with one cloth, and dryed with another,

then did the same with the 400g wet tillsmooth then cleand
then did the same with 800g wet till smooth then cleaned
then did the same with 1000g wet til smooth then cleaned,
then did the same with 1200g et till smooth then cleaned,
then did the same with 1500g wet till smooth then cleaned
then dd the same with 2000g wet, till smooth, but this time, i did this for around 3 times the time taken doin any of the other sanding, just to makesure it was extra smooth,
cleaned, and dried.
i then got at the studs with the precision screw driver, and wire brush, and the alloy wheel cleaner, and scrapped all the crap out of the holes, ready for painting

once ied let it stand to dry i got this on it

i duno if its any gud as to compertition brands, i just baught it cause it said lucas on it, but its aluminium polish, ive done a quick once over on the lip that ied polished, and was very suprised on the out come, thus the reason i did this guide

£30 for alloys for all 4
£10 for lucas polish
£10 for sand paper n ccloths

not bad bargain :D

you really need to take your time and spell, punctuate and generally make things readable.

That was a decent post, would be better with more time spent on it

thats how they where on these

just be carefull when using the rough sand paper, that you dont bollox up paint work, and it is very time consuming, its taken me n average,6-8 hours to sand down, buff up n polish
