this morning at 7.45 i arrived at work after pulling off the main road onto the industrial estate in walthamstow. Took a left turn then slowly crawled along past parked cars at 10 -15 mph. turned right to do a U turn and then it just slid into the back of a HGV lorry stationary at the back.

The steel girder on the back went straight through the headlamp and pushed the slam panel and wing onto the RH wheel. The car couldnt do full lock right. Luckily missed the bumper and only clipped the bonnet.
Headlamp , indicator, headlamp protector, front panel , inner wing and wing ruined.
Gutted is a understatment.
Been quoted today by the Ford bodyshop that the repair will cost £808
panel mechanical labour £213
paintwork + preperation £220
Paint + Materials cost £250
vat £120

All that is Without parts

Ouch

I was worried driving mine to work this morning but managed to get in and out without any problems thankfully

Are you going to get it repaired or look for another one to reshell into ?

Could you get the work done somewhere else cheaper ? I know you work for Ford but might save a few quid going elsewhere and using panels from Beevers

it will be repaired.
thats the 1st quote ive had and to be honest ford dealers charge alot of money even to staff members
the quote was £970 before staff discount. :oooh:

panels are cheap enough with discount and then i get genuine panels and get a proper job.

Unlucky Clark, easily done on an icey road though :(

I assume your not going through your insurance company ?

:-? :-? i feel for you pal ! :( not good but it looks fixable didnt go through and bent the strut panel so could be a case of a new wing, slam panel and light ( and the protector, which will prob be the most expensive!)

Ahhhh im gutted for you

This is the main reason why my FRST does not see the winter anymore, i know this is no help to you but would you, or have you considered storeing it during these harsh winter months and driving a banger??

It does look simple enough to straighten out though so hopefully it will be looking its best again soon.

gunna be worse tomorrow so they reckon as its gunna freeze and be more icey, dont bother going in clark.

way i look at it, is it worth causing hundreds, if not thousdands of pounds worth of damage to your car/others, or lose your NCB to earn what, £60-£100 for the day.... dont think so.

i got a work van so not my insurance etc, but even still, couldnt reverse it out its space this morning but if i could, dont think i would of gone anywhere anyway as i know i would of crashed or got stuck somewhere

Unlucky mate, sorry to see this :(

Running two cars doesn't have to be that expensive - my XR2 only costs me a couple of hundred a year to run. The insurance is cheap as it's on limited miles, and cashing the tax in for the months it doesn't get used means it only costs about £40 a year for that.

Sorry to see this Clark, I wouldn't have risked it in this weather.

I have got virtually all the parts you need to repair this, as Shaun said the biggest loss will be the headlight protector!

Got the slam panel, indicator, headlamp, and the wheel arch and possibly the arch liner.

Really unlucky pal, it really is dangerous out there for any car even with traction control, abs etc.

You're brave using it in this weather mate. On the plus side, it isn't bad - it could have been a lot worse.

The front wing is rotten along the front edge so you can use this as an excuse to sort the bodywork? :D

Ouch! Very small consolation, but with a new wing you'll have the arch lip back. 1996 I think they were cut off, back when Steve had it before me!

For the first few years after I got the FRST, I used to run it until for six months, then when the tax ran out swap the insurance on to my XR2i and put 6 months tax on that until spring. You need to be able to store the one you're not using as SORN, but it's a lot cheaper than running two cars at once. When I started working further away from home I had them both on the go at once, which swallowed up the pay increase I got...

Now I'm back to one car but I cycle to work - it saves a load of money, keeps my mileage down to about 1500 a year, and is great when the roads are like they are now - as long as you stick to cycle paths. It's not convenient for everyone but it works great for me.

Argh, bad luck Clark :( I eventually got out in the snow this afternoon for a play around in the snow and saw a five-car crash. People bumping and crashing all over the place, you're certainly not the only one to be caught out. Fiestas are old and cheap to work on at least; if it were a modern runaround it would cost two or three times that to repair probably! Nice fresh new wing to come of it too, as people have said. Hopefully you're seeing the positive side of the fresh panels and paint now. Bummer nevertheless :(

Thanks for your replies everyone. :)

Adrian - i think a pair of front wings have been on the cards for over a year now and this accident has just brought the date forward a tad

Image

I managed to pull out the inner wing enough to get it in a drivable state. Then smacked out the wing so it looks better lets say.
For now its like this. Not road legal tbh.

I will attempt to persuade the slam panel about to accomodate a headlight for a temporary basis to keep mr plod off my back.
Im considering putting it into a Bodyshop to do the whole car. Paint work has seen better days and the Fuel cap area has got alot worse since 2005.
