Brake down for my FRST
Hey chaps, well tonight my FRST decided to brake down
This is only the secong time in three years of my ownership, the first was in July when the fuel pump packed up.
Any way this evenings failiure is some what odd, and i would'nt have thought many CVH's have had this problem. I was driving along and the car suddenly developed a miss fire, but there was a slight tap from the top end as well, to cut the story short i got the car back home, limped home at 2500rpm, and we found that number 4 was not firing, thought it was a plug at first, put a new one in - still the missfire, presumed two things, either rocker arms or very slight head gasket failure, although unlikely.
So i stripped the rocker cover etc off, and the cause of the problem was the rocker arm contorlling the inlet had compleatly shattered
hence not controlling the valve and causing the missfire. Ive got some pics to post up of the offensing part, will try and do that tommrow.
Ive got plenty of spare rocker arms but the biggest problem is fishing out all the shards of metal which are now lining my head
Great!!!
Gareth.

Its more likely to occur with aftermarket cams, higher lifts with sharper opening ramps and stronger valve springs all add to the strain the rockers are under. IIRC one of the things to do to std rockers is to run a bead of weld around the top edge to prevent them from cracking.

Can you hear me now? Hear you, I can see you, ya dick

Thats a good point S1, only recently i fitted a piper 285 T cam kit , wonder if this rocker was slightly fractured before then? i suppose i will never know now. The car will be all sorted and running with in a couple of hours though as i have plently of spare cvh's

Just to update this, i finished repairing the car on Sunday, fished all the metal out, drained oil out and fished around in the sump using a flexi magnet to pick up any metal which may have gone down through the drain holed in the head. Put her all back together and the car is running sweet again.
Any way heres some pics of the mashed rocker :

Bummer! Any chance of getting a set welded as S1 suggested and swapping them all over?
Tip: Taking photo's from a distance will make them clearer even though the the subject will be smaller. At least it'll be in focus that way

I could weld some up myself, but ive just rplaced this one for now, whilst i had the rocker cover off i inspected the other seven for cracks, etc and they all seem ok, if it happens again i will remove them all chuck them in the bin, get eight off one of my spare cvh's, weld them and fit those!
Fingers crossed this wont be happening again though.
Oh cheers for the tip
