Xr2i Expansion Tank pressure and overheating,

Postby RossYB on Sun Jun 19, 2016 9:32 pm

New member on here. :)

Have bought a 1991 Xr2i, It's been off the road since 1998.
Basically, If it's started and driven it's fine. If left ticking over for 10/15mins it'll steam out the expansion tank. (Someone previous has drilled a hole on the cap) Leaving the cap off it'll overflow. The car also gets hot on the gauge.

Doesn't seem to be Headgasket as no obvious signs.
And yes the fan works.

Where would one start?

Thanks, Yes will probably do a thermostat and waterpump anyway. :)

Here's an idea.... The car was bought with the head in boot, It's been pressure tested and a new Headgasket fitted. What I'm thinking is the hole in the expansion cap is not leaving the system build up pressure, If a new cap is fitted and it pressurises wouldn't that raise the boiling point and should keep in cooler?

Just wondering if anyone has had similar issues.

does it bubble and shoot out the expansion tank when its cold or cool? if so thats classic sign of headgasket failure.

Nope....

I'v fitted another expansion bottle cap.... Ran for near 10mins and didn't do the same.
Looks like it asn't building pressure due to the hole in the old cap!

I'll drive it tomorrow but fingers crossed :Q

I got a new rad on my old rad was in very good condition considering its 21 years old. but they are cheap to change.
fan seems to cool car down a bit quicker now temp drops a bit faster so new rad may be a tab bit more efficient.

The point of the cap on the expansion bottle is to to maintain pressure on the cooling system, preventing it from boiling (same principle as a pressure cooker). If it has a hole in it, replace it. If it leaks at normal operating temps, replace it.
Nothing to see here...
