Door builds Version 2!

Now that we know the mids would work the way we wanted them to...I decided to work on a new layout for the doors as I wasnt happy with the rush job I did on the last...

The tweeter builds will remain, but the bottom section of the door card will change...moving 1 midrange from the door to the kick panels...you will see why this was done a bit later...

1 Router bit and LOTS of saw dust later...I was left with this...

Image

Port anyone?! LOL
Image

Time to recess the midrange
Image

Lots of recessing later
Image

Image

Image

A few different layouts were considered...this was the initial one I was going for...
Image

With the above, I was going to have an Ascendant logo in the middle kinda like their 'badge' logo...but decided against it...

This layout was then agreed upon...
Image

Wrapped up...
Image

At this point I wasnt really happy with the desgn and keeping the empty space...The original AA logo idea came back to mind...

I wasnt happy with the last design (again!), so I wanted something else to fill in the little gap...

Make a cardboard template
Image

Draw onto wood
Image

Cut out
Image

Et Voila!
Image

Time to wrap
Image

One last test fit
Image

Then they were resined!

Door builds Version 2.0

Resined and strengthened with matting
Image

For the little 'blank' area, I decided to put a logo there...Initial plans were for a AA logo...
Image

Some sanding later
Image

Image

Test fitting
Image

Image

Image

After a while of thought and putting a few logo ideas down...the AA idea changed into a SPB idea!
Image

These were then flocked!

FG'd and smoothed
Image

Test fit (Again!)
Image

More midrange 'inside' the cabin now whether doors are open or closed!
Image

And a sneak people to the logos
Image

Retrimmed the top sections of the door cards to...and changed the flock to grey

I wanted to have a screen in the roof to allow connection of a rear view camera and a DVD player so I could have flexibility in the cabin;

DVD/navigation
DVD/browsing the web
Rear view camera working while driving
Rear view camera/web browsing
Rear view camera/playing music
etc etc

I chose a Veba 'rear view' screen (Veba AV70MM) simply for the shape of it looking like a rear view mirror...having 2 inputs was perfect for what I needed to achieve the above.

Also locating it where an OEM rear view mirror would go would allow me for a 'natural' rear view by simply looking up

First off, make some templates...
Image

Transfer these onto wood and cut out
Image

Image

Image

Assemble
Image

Image

Time to strip apart the screen and flush it into the build

As with everything else....test fit time!
Image

Image

Image

I know its a bit bulky but you adjust to live with it lol! Still have perfect view of the road...and with a bit of know how, its removable just incase I didnt want to have it up

The front section needed a bit of smoothing in
Image

Image

The edges of the roof needed finishing off, so I needed to either get the edges of the standard roof lining (which is now in the bin), or fabricate some of my own....out came some more FG and fabric!

The screen build was flocked and vinyled...

Image

Image

Image

Fitted...playing some Def Comedy Jam....Cederic the entertainer doing his CLASS act!!
Image

Image

Time to update on the amp builds me thinks!

Here is the 2 SPL Dynamics S6002 and the S1200 (which was sold...used the run the 4 8s originally)

Each S6002 is wired to 2ohm per channel, resulting in each amp doing 2 x 500wrms...so 1kwrms on tweeters and the same on the 7's!
Image

Mocking up the board for the S6002's
Image

Lots of timber was cut to create the framework for the amp racks...I was just going to use MDF to mount the amps directly on...but I wanted something a bit stronger to ensure no flex for whatever reason!
Image

These were then knocked up into this

Inch thick MDF added
Image

All 4 sorted
Image

Test fitted
Image

Image

At this point, we were decided on running 4 SPL Dynamics D5's...however, due to a supply problem...we are considering a few options...however, the amp layout will remain the same

For a little while, the amp rack remained like this
Image

Ignore the nasty cabling LOL! Everything was lashed in to make sure it all worked ok and to encounter any potential problems we will see at full power....had a ROCK solid power supply before the batteries were sold though!! 3 x XS Power D3100s!!

Remaining parts of the back of the box were carpeted to - although these bits wont be seen once everything else is fitted and the front panels are on etc...I wanted to put carpet onto the mounting surfaces just to make sure there were no vibrations etc
Image

Image

SPL Dynamics D5 was moved up
Image

Remainder of the side panels were made
Image

Image

Image

Carpeted
Image

Some of you may have noticed I complain of voltage issues night and day...in the next picture you will see why pimsle!!!!!!!!!!!
Image

And a rather nice pic of the S6002's

Think it might be time for some TL scores now that everyone knows my power supply and problems LOL!

Been getting a few PM's about the car PC setup...basically its a mini ITX type PC complete with touch screen monitor, 4 internal USBs and an external USB hub with external power supply, GPS, 120gig hard drive, Centrafuse interface....bought off Steve off TA with the following spec

voom pc case
Via VB series board VB7001
centrafuse 2 installed
M2-ATX PSU car power supply
cooling fan
3x5m usb cables
soundcard
bluetooth dongle
gps reciever
vga cable
120gb hard drive
usb hub
memory stick with drivers and centrafuse 2
lilliput touchscreen , stripped down for custom fit into double din

Nifty little thing!

First thing was to modify the existing fascia panel to accept the touch screen (not got any photos of the standard fascia with the headunit in)

In the mean time, ill post up a link to another car we have been working on hoping to get ready for the show to! vw-passat-build-3-ascendant-10s-spl-dynamics-amps-vt186912/

Right not updated this for around a month now and there is a good reason behind that which I shall explain at a later date...

I havent really done much to the vehicle to be honest and I hope to press on with it next week.

The SPL Dynamics D5 I had in there has been sold (well deposit taken)...so this paves way for me to get the SPL Dynamics ICE 3500d's. However, I have the small issue of the charging system to sort out first!

Some boring pics for those who are interested

10g speaker cable front to back - 4 runs per door
Image

Knu Konceptz Krystal RCAs
Image

Image

Also got this handy little machine to print lables
Image

Type in what you want
Image

It prints it out
Image

Image

I can now keep track of what cables are for what! Quite handy when all the cables are braided LOL!

Image

Image

Image

Ill get some more recent pics up soon of the cables neat and tidy

Under the centre console got a seeing to as well
Image

Image

Image

45meters....YES FOURTY FIVE meters of 1/0 Knu Konceptz Fleks cable!!!!
Image

Image

The idea behind the 0g, is basically 4 runs of 0g positive from front to back, and 2 maybe 3 runs of 0g negative front to back to! This is to keep up with the current supply of 3 maybe 4 210a alternators charging at 16-17v!

Ill get some pics of the alts up in a second...they are just repetitive to be honest as I was messing around with a friends SLR camera at the time so thought I would have a play!

Also for those electrically minded...you will probably notice that I have the main fuse holder, which is then connected to a smaller fuse holder beside it...its connected with 20a cable however will never pull that much current...

The smaller fuse box will only be running things like processer (epicenter), rear view camera, parking sensors, remote relay etc etc so should never even see more than approx 10a if that!

Back to the alts!
