Recent Site Downtime

Postby Ollybee on Thu Mar 06, 2008 9:44 pm

The site has been going down for the odd ten minutes at a time over the past few days. It has just come back on after about fifteen minutes of getting the usual internet error message saying the website is experiencing difficulties etc. This has been the fifth time today that I have counted.

Is this a temporary thing, as I was under the impression the new server last year would solve these issues?

I haven't seen it personally, though I've read a few posts that suggests it is happening. I've no idea why either I'm afraid :-?

8th March.

It's just come back on line. It went down at 1207hrs and came back to life at 1224hrs. I don't think it's at my end as other websites load up and load up quickly.

Out of interest, are you using your ISP's DNS or say, opendns to resolve hostnames ? It could be glitches / problems with DNS rather than the site ?

OpenDNS servers are at :-

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

When it happens, resetting my router seems to work.

Does anyone know why it would only block ft.com though?

Re: Recent Site Downtime

Postby andymac on Tue Mar 11, 2008 9:29 pm

Again odd, because I was on much of the evening last night and never noted an outage. :-?

A DNS server is computer systemf that turns a "hostname" (e.g. http://www.fiestaturbo.com) into an "IP address" (e.g. 192.168.1.200). If the DNS server can't be contacted then you can't turn hostnames into IP addresses and the computers can't communicate.

A quick and easy test is to try "PING"ing a computer on the net (kind of like a sonar "ping"), this will test if DNS is working and that traffic is making it out. The ping sends a message out to a specified computer requesting a response, unless the computer has responses to pings blocked by a firewall (or simply disabled on the computer) it'll send a message back in response.

This is dead easy to do, just open a command prompt (Start menu then run, or press the windows key and "R"). Then type "CMD" (leave off the quotes) and press enter. A black window should appear. Now type...

Code: Select all
ping www.fiestaturbo.com

If DNS is working, you'll see something like...

Code: Select all
Pinging www.fiestaturbo.com [85.91.227.78] with 32 bytes of data:

if not, you'll see something like this...

Code: Select all
Ping request could not find host www.fiestaturbo.com. Please check the name and try again.

If you get the "could not find host" message try this...

Code: Select all
ping 213.249.137.10

This is a router at my workplace that's permanently connected to the internet, it's a good test for connectivity because it's ALWAYS on. If you get replies then the net's probably working.

Make some notes of this above then try it when it goes wappy and post the results up when it's working.

Oh, to close the command prompt window click on the cross at the top right or type "EXIT" and press enter.

Looks to me to be a problem at your end of things. We've had no issues here with the server or the network and looking in the logs I can see plenty of access still going on at the times you are having trouble.

What ISP are you on?

Also, pinging won't work, as pings are blocked by the firewall. Next time you can't view the site, do an nslookup on fiestaturbo.com (same as a ping but type nslookup) to see if you get the IP back, also try a traceroute (same again, but type tracert) to fiestaturbo.com, but this should stop at firewall-b.1steasy.net.

Also, try and view rewards4.com, as that is on the same network.

The only downtime we've had has been on Wednesday mornings when the server has frozen during the backups, we're looking into how to stop this happening.

@Ade - Yeah I noticed packets were dropped, was going to move onto traceroute-ing the webserver next if it was resolving correctly. I'm in agreement re the ISP - I've had similar effects before when I had multiple IP's attached to my BB account. They never worked properly so ditched them a couple of months ago.

@Olly, since you can turn http://www.fiestaturbo.com into an address, the next thing to check (when it's broken) is the route to the webserver. To do this, get he command prompt open and type

Code: Select all
tracert www.fiestaturbo.com

This will then try to trace all the way from your computer to the webserver that hosts fiestaturbo. You should see something similar to this...

Code: Select all
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew>tracert www.fiestaturbo.com

Tracing route to www.fiestaturbo.com [85.91.227.78]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     3 ms     2 ms     1 ms  home [192.168.1.254]
  2    31 ms    31 ms    30 ms  l1.ar21.f2s.gs1.dsl.pipex.net [62.241.167.241]
  3    33 ms    31 ms    29 ms  ge-2-0-1.2.cr01.gs1.dsl.pipex.net [62.241.167.57]
  4   122 ms    32 ms   246 ms  pc24-102.cr05.tn5.bb.pipex.net [62.72.139.109]
  5   109 ms    30 ms    33 ms  503.ge-1-3-0.mpr1.lhr2.uk.above.net [209.249.203.137]
  6    95 ms    31 ms    32 ms  213-152.240-110.PXu259.above.net [213.152.240.110]
  7    48 ms    49 ms    60 ms  ge-3-0-0-0.raphael.as34270.net [85.91.232.2]
  8    40 ms    38 ms    39 ms  ge-0-2-0-0.rembrandt.as34270.net [85.91.232.6]
  9    36 ms    39 ms    38 ms  firewall-b.1steasy.net [85.91.226.126]
10     *        *        *     Request timed out.
11     *        *        *     Request timed out.
12     *     ^C
C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew>

I pressed Ctrl-C at hop 12 as there wasn't going to be any more information to be had, hopefully you should get to firewall-b.1steasy.net at some point, if you don't then there's a routing problem somewhere. If you do, well, we'll have to think harder

Its the names of the routers your internet traffic is passing through to get from your pc to fiestaturbo.com, but to someone technical it can tell you where things maybe going wrong.

OK the site has been down all morning and I haven't been able to get on from either home or from work until now so I guess that kind of rules out my router.

What's going on then because this is really annoying and I thought we pay a subscription now to stop this happeneing.

As Ade said you wont be able to ping fiestaturbo.com because it is blocked by the hosting companys firewall, but it does show your isp's DNS is working because it resolves the ip 85.91.227.78

The first few tracert's look ok, because its showing the hops for everything upto firewall-b.1steasy.net, after that it wont get a reply. But it does mean if the site isn't loading its something inside the hosting companys network possibly.

The last tracert you done, looks like there is a problem else where on the internet because the hops didnt make it to firewall-b.1steasy.net

Next time its down try :-

Just to say I'm also experiencing similar things - not as often as Olly, also on an ex-ntl connection. This doesn't figure though as the other morning I couldn't access it via Synetrix either. So that's two ISP's definitely doing the same things.

Best to make a note of the time to see if there is a trend and try the other site Ade mentioned further up the post. The more info there is the better chance of getting to the bottom of it.

Progress !!!

If it does this again, let it time out a few more times before cancelling, just in case it finds another router. Looks like the BT router there is dropping the ball somehow (hop 3).
