Hi Paul

If it's getting to 120C on the road, I would think track would get higher, so I would go for a good 5w-4.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT+, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition.

Cheers

Hi Tim,

Cheers for the reply.

I have had Millers Nano-driver 5W-40 before and didn't like it, could feel the car was slower with it in and as soon as I changed it back for 5W-30 it was back to being normal and free revving again. Was almost like it was holding the engine back...very weird!

How hot can Millers XF Long Life Eco 5W-30 go before it starts cooking itself?
I'm going to try and run some ducting towards the sump to try and cool the oil but may have to bite the bullet and go for a 5W-40.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul

Rather than it being specifically the CFS NT 5w-40 that wasn't ideal, I think it would be the viscosity as the engine likes a 5w-30. The problem is that your car is getting hot enough to want a thicker oil, so I would say either get an oil cooler or go for a thicker oil. There are top 5w-30s like the Fuchs Pro S, Motul 300V and Red Line and they are probably fine at 120C, but wouldn't want to use them much hotter.

The Longlife Eco 5w-30 is a Ford 913 spec oil, so is not the most stable of oils and not what I would use in your engine as it will break down relatively quickly.

Regards

Hi Tim,

Again, thanks for the reply, good to get a fast response from someone who knows what they are talking about!

Hmmm... that's not so good on the current oil not being the most stable. May have to change that out and see what I have available. What sort of temperature is it stable up to?

I understand what you are saying on the viscocity being the problem, I understand that is is the issue rather than the brand itself, but my issue is that until the engine is hot I'll still see this issue.

I think cooling is the way to go, rather than an oil which will either keep the engine happy at low temps and cook when pushed hard or work at high temps but make an unhappy engine the rest of the time!

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul

The Ford 913 oils are designed to improve economy, so what happens is you put in a 5w-30 oil, but then it breaks down to a slightly thinner grade relatively quickly. In a standard road car, where the oil is probably only getting to 100C, that's fine, but the higher the temp gets, the quicker the oil breaks down.

I agree that cooling the oil is the best option, but as it's going to be getting some hard use, I would still use a performance oil (Fuchs Pro S, Motul 300V or Red Line), rather than a normal road oil.

Cheers
