Project XR2Tii has begun... friday stripped half the interior, leaving:
- 1 seat
- 1 seatbelt
- dash
- doorpanels
- ceiling
- wiring

all the rest was stripped out (-: and stored in my 'shed'

Saterday my father-tobe-in-law stripped one side .. and started on the bodywork

Is that a lightweight panel? If not, why are you replacing the original may I ask? Seems criminal to be doing anything to your car! I can't believe you're using such a show car as a track car! :aaah:

Nope.. not a leightweigt.. but a panel without any rust ..

My old panel had much hidden rust (under the doorsil, under the rear-lights, around the rear lights, the wheel arches..

and some stress-dents ..

to get this all out .. i had to replace the complete panel.

And.. a track car ?? where ??

The car was build up 2 years ago within a month .. due to the fact that i didn't have a vehicle to transport myself..

Now that i drive a company car (focus) i can leave the car in the garage for a while for this rebuild to be executed till perfect..

The car will be driveable for track.. but it's mainly for show..

otherwise i wouldn't tune it up to 200BHP+

We'll .. me and my "father in law to be" have been busy again.,.

me:

stripping the doors .. sides etc.. .. and some sanding..

my "father in law to be" has been busy with welding.. squirting sikkaflex, spraying "tectiel" (that black anti-rust stuff) .. filler, polyester .. sanding.. flexing.. soldering (to fill up some of the gaps between some of the panels) the rear panel..

and fixing some rusty parts that are out of sight normally..

He also smoothened one of the locks (by soldering a piece of sheetmetal behind it .. and smooth it out using both solder.. and filler..

ehhm more story .. and pics to come

New pics.. and progress

The new panel is in place.. the skirts are fixed.. they will be smoothed in with the rest of the car..
Image

Smoothed the new panel in
Image

Panel egdes have been treated to preserve them for rust
Image

Last but not least.. the new doorhandles.. look at the first picture for the adjustment made to the door...
Now all we need to do is make a new connecting rod .. (left and right handles are swapped because of the difference in mechanisme of the MK3 handles and the MK1 handles

"to tie the handles in" :

- Chromed XR2Tii decal on the boot
- Chromed Turbo "oval" on the boot
- White rear clusters
- White side repeaters (Focus style leds)
- White front indicators
- Chomeed fan-cover
- Pace intercooler

and to finish this of. i choose the chromed doorhandles .. otherwise there would be such a great piece of purple between the front and the rear (-:

another update (-:

like we (my father in law to be and me) have nothing else to do :-p

The smoothed in skirt.. tested.. and passed.. i could nearly lift the car whilst pulling it .. without any cracks (-: .. it riggid.. but flexible enough (-:

Image

The skirt is fully smoothed in.. no more rivets etc..
Image

Also been shopping yesterday evening..
Not much seen in Holland.. but this person had it in his shed for around 4 years.. an original early type MCR frontlip .. cost me around 65 quid... and was just a 20 miles drive (-:

Some new updates.. after have pauzed for 1,5 months (due to personal reasons of both me .. and my "father in law to be"

Here's the bad-boy bonnet before (after removing some of the filler)

The new line is visible.. after some 'tips' here from FT.com we decided to cut the Badboy more in the line of the car.

Image

Here with a new coat of polyfibre filler
Image

A view from the inside.. even there it's smoothened
Image

An overvieuw of the front..
Image

This will be the start of the new boot

Some called me crazy .. and asked me .. why i wanted to redo my fester..

well .. this was the main reason.. (see first pic)
We mainained the original shape to transfer it on the new "to be welded in" plate .. The original material was al rusted away.. or rusted thin..

Image

The new inner-wheel arch was completely gone.. for about 1,5".
By using a piece of outer arch .. we re-created the new inner arch
All has to be tydied up ..

My father in law to be is doing a great job (-:

I can't wait

But it will be ready for FITP next year (-:

The rust around the tankcap was taken care of..

The inner rear wing was replaced with new panels..
The inner tank-hole was redone ..

A new panel was put on.. and welded into place..(and using sealant material to seal off the bondings of the 2 panels..

Image

Also i've been busy with the new doorhandles..
The outside before
Image

The inside... with a new rod to connect the modified handle mechanism to the door-lock (p.s. don't mind the anti-rust tar stuff.. where the lock used to be)
Image

A closeup of the mechanism

The outside after...
