MWSTEWART | 500+ BHP Project | 28/01/2019

A few snippests from the Si project I'm working on. Another distraction from the Quattro! I should have this one 'out the door' over Easter.

http://www.mwstewart.co.uk/articles/mk3si2litre/

£1k worth of new Ford bits so far to get it to my standard. I want to improve all the driver interfaces and make sure the car feels & drives as optimally as possible for the spec. A few of the parts that have gone on:
Image

Low mileage Escort 1.8 Zetec iB5 (left). Non-Si/Gti for higher ratios.
Image

Mk7 Fiesta Brakes and Mk2 Mondeo Servo/MC. My brief is 14" wheels and good brakes, Mk7 brakes are 260mm but have the largest pistons yet used by Ford on this size.
Image

HO
Image

Changing Petrol 5th for Diesel 5th. I gave up trying to find a 5th gear puller, so fabricated my own.
Image

Diesel 5th vs 1800 Zetec 5th

Done
Image

Shafts rebuilt, all gen. Ford - although I'm about to do away with standatd O/S and fit something different.
Image

Puma linkage. Did this 10 years ago and is still one of my favourite mods on the Mk3.
Image

ST170 manifold and Saab downpipe.
Image
Image
Image
Lambda relocated to just before cat, and cat entrance area shortened by 2".
Image

Bosses added for standard shield etc. Looks standard:
Image

Rebuilding Recaros. I bought several interiors to get a pair of superb seats. I reset side bolster supports to original position etc.

More to come when I have time to write it up properly.

Mate, every time I see pictures of your work and the depths you go into I'm just in awe of it all! What makes it even more impressive is that the dribs and drabs that do make onto the site are no doubt only a small fraction of what you've actually been doing :)

Thanks for the comments guys :) I've got a full set of genuine panels to go on yet 8)

Rob, Linkage is relatively straight-forward to fit and I willw rite a guide for it. I wouldn't recommend it on a BC box, though. The synchro's aren't up to the speed of shift the new linkage can give.

Here it is. 61K and Full Service History, all old Bills, MOTs etc. There was a mark on the tailgate and bonnet but I've replaced both since these photos.

Thanks mate. I might put a low budget ZT in there at some point, but nothing special, I don't want it to become so valuable that I begin to worry about leaving it places etc. :) Now the Ghia is finished, and this, I want to focus on the Quattro project.

It's not a straight swap, but it's pretty easy. I will write a guide ASAP.

Nicely done....oooh i'd love to have a pile of new parts like that to put on my car.

What colour is it? it looks black but then it almost looks like a really dark metallic brown kind of colour.

the diesel has a longer 5th ratio IIRC so higher top speed, and better fuel economy at cruise

ok so when you have changed to 5th it can drive upto a faster speed better/quicker than the petrol gear

makes sense now thats a good idea :)

no it would take longer to get to the top speed as its a longer gear, but it would take you to a higher top speed then the petrol one (taking longer to get to it compared toa petrol ;) )

Petrol 1800 5th is mismatched for the 2.0 IMO. I plotted the graphs using projects utility.

RS1800:
RS1800.jpg

Rebuilt with Diesel 5th:
rs1800_diesel_hybrid.jpg

You can see on the RS1800 graph just how short the 5th is, this is to negate the lack of torque from the 1800 engine. The 2.0 can cope with much more than the 0.87:1 5th.

Adding the 0.76:1 5th gives a nice spread of ratios without too much rev drop between 4th-5th.

I beleive some Escort 1.8 Zetec's had the 0.76:1 5th

Very nice project, Mark :)

Like what you've done with the manifold. Have you worked out the lengths of secondaries? Or have you based it upon the fact that it will without doubt flow better than the standard cast item full stop!

In a 4-2-1 manifold the secondary lengths are much less important than the primaries, which remain untouched here. Essentially, though, this was #2 :D as there's no real analysis behind my choice - it's simply my opinion that this has got to be better than the standard item. The original Zetec Mk3's had a twin tube down pipe but this was discontinued due to problems and replaced in 1993 with the more familiar single tube item.

Good article on manifold design: http://www.btinternet.com/~richard.d.miles/exhaust.html

I'm going to start stripping my Orion 1.8 LX in the next few days because it had excellent gearing and I want it back in, so I'll let you know what's in that. Spent ages trying to find another box the same without any success :( Much nicer ratios than the XR2i and RS1800 boxes though!
