There a 1 or 2 Mk4 Fiesta police cars around here. No idea what they would do if they had to give pursuit in a chase.

They're panda cars, for taking officers from the station to a callout, not police chases!! Police do more than traffic laws. I've seen some MK5's round my way, long gone now, replaced by Astra's :(. Seen a few MK4's and a couple of MK3's :)

They use Fiesta police cars round here - used to be Mk4s, then they graduated up to Mk5s and then Mk6s. Have been in the back of a Mk5 Fiesta panda car!

They have all got either Focus estates, or the mercs.

There are also a few undercover BMWs and Vauxhaulls.

Round here its Octavia RS's.... Good choice I rekon. Quick, cheap replacement parts etc. Used to be alot of crappy 206's with little wheel caps... bobby cars blatantly... and Volvo T5's for traffic cops :)

Loads of Skoda Fabia undercover cars.... if you see a silver or black Fabia you slow down...

Maybe thats was part of the plan it looking like a piece of s**t.

As you would expect the police to be in expensive undercover cars and the metro.

But then again once you had noticed it, you would keeep noticing it, making it pointless

I say this every time police and fiesta are mentioned in a thread:

If anyone has *any* info about the 2-stroke fiesta prototypes given to (and crashed by) the southern constabulary (Met or TVP iirc) please step forward now - I would love to see what a Ford 2-stroke engine looks like.

So, almost a year on it's proven that I wasn't imagining things - the Haynes museum has one of the prototype 1.2 3cyl 2T fiestas on display, in near mint condition. Info reveals it was powered by an Orbital developed engine and was actually capable of passing the then-current emissions legislation.

Big thanks to heeman10 for the heads up and photos, thanks for remembering my interest mate!

What was the power output?

Also what is the large black tank to the left of the engine bay?

1989 Fiesta III Diesel. Experimental 2-Stroke

Even with a larger, more powerful version of Ford's diesel the Fiesta was never going to be lively. Its official fuel consumption figures were not as good as before on the urban cycle or at a constant 56mph, but at 75mph it still managed 50.4mpg and its acceleration was slightly faster than a 1.1-litre petrol car with the optional 5-speed gearbox. In 1992, Ford revealed an experiment to equip the Fiesta with an engine that looked as though it had been consigned, through its inability to meet increasingly demanding emissions regulations, to the dustbin of technology in the 1960s. A 2-stroke was equipped with a compressed air fuel metering system so precise that its emissions were relatively clean. Unburnt hydrocarbons no longer escaped in such profusion and the virtues of fewer moving parts, no valves, springs, camshaft or pushrods, 30% less weight, 12% better economy and 10% more power, persuaded Ford to run a programme running 3-cylinder 1200cc 2-strokes in 50 Fiestas for field trials. They were astonishingly smooth-running with none of the popping and banging associated with old-style two-strokes. A tank under the bonnet supplied oil to the engine for 12500 miles without refilling, but it turned out to be problematical in service and the experiment was concluded.

Weight: 870kg
Engine: 1.2-litre 3-cyl, 80bhp @ 5500rpm, 90lbft @ 4000rpm. Sarich forced-air 6bar fuel injection system driven by reciprocating pump driven off crankshaft; sealed crankcase, reed valve intakes, engine 100mm lower and 70mm narrower than 4-cyl, roller-bearing forged one-piece crankshaft.
Max speed: 104.7mph
0-62mph: 10.7s
Average 49.6mpg

I should have seen this thread earlier! It was common knowledge that many of the cop cars in our area were used for development purposes. I remember the 2-stroke Fiesta very well. They also had the 1800 diesel in mk3 escorts way before they were on the production line.
