Mk3.5 1.3 HCS - Which engine swap?

Postby TubeRider on Sun Jan 22, 2017 8:16 pm

Hi guys,

There are some brilliant guides on engine swaps that I will definitely be referring to if I go ahead with this, but none that I can find relating to my exact starting position.

My uncle is now too old to drive and has given me his 1995 Mk3.5 Fiesta Ghia 1.3 HCS that he bought new. It's in really good condition - only done 60K miles. Having changed the suspension I really like the firmer ride. The only problem is the engine. It's noisy and underpowered!! I'm an ok DIY mechanic with a decent set of tools so I fancy giving an engine swap a go.

My question is, from this start point (1.3 HCS) , what is the best engine to go for in terms of minimum effort, maximum benefit? Ideally I don't want to be making up new brackets or having to modify engine mounts etc

Purely in terms of capacity and power gain I'd like to go for a 1.6 or 1.8 unit (a 2l conversion sounds a lot more involved).

Has anyone out there got experience of a 1.3->1.6 or 1.3->1.8 swap?

Thanks guys!
