Re: Introducing Katie's Dirty Little Sister...
I keep pondering a zt build but i find it a mine field with pistons and rods, i.e what pistons to get, then knowing if i can use standard rods, or if alternative items are required etc. From some research i done a while ago it seemed the vauxhall 86mm pistons were an "easier" way to go, but then the standard rods need adapting to fit!
What pistons and rods are these that you are using?? pm if you dont want to post it here, any help / advice is much appreciated.
Gareth.
The return to standard, from the above sig pics - back to how Ford intended..............

Re: Project "K80" ZT - New Engine Stripped (20/05)
Pistons are made by ARIAS and were actually made for a Honda F22 engine. All the numbers on them add up to fit a ZT though using FRS rods which is nice.
Today I have stripped down the new engine ready to be modified and rebuilt. I had planned on taking a photo of what the engine looks like now but I forgot Very strange discovery though is that it seems to have a 1.8 head on it?! Not too happy about that, no idea if some came like that from factory or not but I shall be refitting a 2ltr head on anyway. Pics below show the head with the "1.8 HO" stamp, 2ltr ones I've seen have "2.0 MO" stamped inside them It's a 1997 Series 2 engine if that matters.
And finally, I've also found some Nissan 200SX (SR20DET engine) side-fed injectors rated at 370cc, so if and when they turn up it gives me the option of running the Zetec inlet rather than the FRST.

Re: Project "K80" ZT - Engine Stripped With 1.8 Head?! (20/05)
Have you got another head yet? The 1.8 head may be fine, it's 45 cc instead of a 2 litre head which is 50cc. It just depends what compression ratio the bottom end gives you. That all needs to be calculated correctly

Get a syringe and measure those combustion chambers, Wayne.
I can't see there being any other difference between your head and a 2.0 head other than the chambers, so like Ryan says, you may be fine, depending on compression ratio. My 2.0 head was a late one, too, something like a 96 or 97. The one I looked at first with nothing on was an early one. I'd swap you, but the reason I'm not using my 2.0 one is because it's been skimmed so much in a past life that my pretty straight 1.8 head seemed the better option!

How do I do that then Mr Barter?
I've googled and ebayed the casting number on the side of the head and every result comes back as a 2ltr? If so then why does it have a fecking 1.8 stamp inside

Re: Project "K80" ZT - Engine Stripped With 1.8 Head?! (20/05)
I expect the heads are cast before machining and stamping.
You need to use a syringe to measure the chambers as Simon said, but ....
Put an old cd on top of the chamber, sealed with a smear of Vaseline
Use paraffin to fill, you will know its full when the miniscus is level with the bottom lip of the cd hole. As long as you can fit 50cc in your in luck. Remember tho, this will change when you have the head skimmed. 1mm skim can increase c/r by 0.5 iirc on a 86mm bore zt. If you look back through one of my threads I've got all the calculations you need

Could you not just measure the diameter of the chamber where it's circular?

No. You are measuring volume not diameter.

I would have thought the chamber would be different diameters between the 1.8 and 2.0 though to closer match the bore size?

Re: Project "K80" ZT - Engine Stripped With 1.8 Head?! (20/05)
As Ryan says, that's pretty much how I measured mine and found out my 2.0 head was pointless! I think all my 2.0 chambers ended up being 44.5cc each.
I know what Mark is trying to say, as the diameter of the rounded part of the chamber should determine whether it is a 1.8 or 2.0 head regardless of what the chamber size is. If Wayne measures his and it's over 80(ish)mm then it should be a 2.0, as I remember checking a 2.0 head out ages back to see if I could use it on a 1.8 block and it was larger than the 1.8 bore... So as a rough answer, it should tell you something!
