Hydrographics/water transfer printing *updated*

Postby hamps on Wed Sep 18, 2013 10:31 am

I started this a while ago because I wanted to try something different, plus it gets harder by the day to run Medway RS Centre so I'm slowly phasing it all out.

Hydrographics can be applied to anything that can be painted basically. the part is prepped and based, the chosen film/pattern goes in a stainless thermostatically controlled tank of water, it is then left for a set time normally 30-90 seconds before being sprayed with a special activator, this dilutes the backing and leaves the print on the water, the part is then dipped through the film, left for a bit, rinsed, dryed and then clear coated, the finish is as durable as paint.

Here are some pics of various jobs and samples I have done if anyone wants anything done call me on 07790195006

Typical prices for example Alloy wheels from £40 so it's not a bank breaker, but the effects and finishes are endless.

Yes mate to a certain extent, some stuff has to be dipped in two parts giving a join, but 9 times out of ten the join isn't visable.

Normally cylindrical type parts need a join if a "dip and roll" technique cant be achieve, what you have to remember is you can only expect the film to put up with so much before it gives up, misses bits or tears!

The callipers above were very difficult due to the complex shapes, but they were done in one dip, being carbon print too makes it extra difficult.

Why'd you ask?

Had a mk4 Golf grille to do along with the front and rear badges.

Grille was prepped and based with a grey metalic, dipped in carbon look film then clear coated with a black tint added.

The badges front and rear. The rear base plate was only treated to the grey base and cleared so when the badge is mounted to it it contrasts well.

Current project, Mini Cooper R53 dash trims

Started off in silver

Based up in a very dark grey pearl

Then dipped sorry it's carbon again

Then cleared, but with more black added to give it a subtle look

Had two small trim pieces to do for a scrambler motorbike, prepped, based in white, dipped in $100 bills then cleared with a grey tint added for a more realistic look (customer didn't want green)

How much do you reckon an X box controller would be to get done?
My kids would love a custom one each.

Depends on if you strip them down, or you want me too, but in the skulls a ready stripped controller or new clam shell £20 each and you could do a different colour on each one :Q

The bad ass skulls film comes in like a black colour, so I can dip this over lighter colours, the other skull pattern on the charge carrier above is a white pattern so I can dip this over black no problem, the skulls will show up bright white but I can tint the clear coat as i did for the charge carrier to tone it down a tad and I an also lay candy opaque colours over the top before clear coat, the effects really are endless :D

The wheels will cost you between 40-60 per wheel depending on prep involved, the wheels have to have the tyres removed prior to coming to me though.
