Don't short the back light to supply, you need to insert a current limiting resistor (or modulate the brightness through a transistor and pwm) or it will go pop.

Talking to a lambda probe isn't too hard, but reading from a modern wb probe realistically requires a support ic (IMHO not worth reverse engineering it) as there are other functions including calibration to deal with.

the back light will be via a resistor mate, theres one installed on the board for contrast, so i'll prob spur off from that

You should add one; there's a reason brightness and contrast are connected seperately. You will also need to consider the impact of increased current consumption too, the backlight will significantly increase that, which would have an impact on the the regulator (heat dissipation for one) and battery life.

Personally I'd use something like this with a 100r range. Connect positive leg to one side and the feed to the anode on the backlight to the middle leg. Twist the pot all the way to one side, away from the leg you connected to then power on and wind it back until you're happy with the backlight. Not all LCDs are created equal so what suits one may not suit another.

I'd also consider replacing or adding a dc jack (mono headphone jack works just fine and easy to mount to the plastic) to the box, to replace the pp3 connection. If you have power in the car to power the ecu and diagnostics, you may as well use it to power the tool. I think that's what I was getting at at one point ages ago, probably tired, stressed or pissed when I originally posted tbh.

true, i might add one then, just checked maplin stock on the island, none...

as for the dc jack, i wont bother mate, for what little use it will have ill keep it battery powered, i might even take the pp3 connector out as i dont think ill ever use it, or maybe ill box mount it like awol has

the biggest problems i have with these if getting the 3 pin plugs... all scrap yards around here are well strict and don't allow you to walk around anymore, some BS about health and safety...

well, i put a new battery in mine today and just had blocks across the screen, it done this years ago too.
i did send it to the guy that designed it and he said the chip was fine but the screen could be iffy

tried new screen few mins ago (soldering iron still cooling down ), still blocks across it, minds fcuked, thats the end of that then

thats true, it did get turned on and i didnt find it untill, well fcuk knows when, the battery was well dead

this is all i get

i didnt solder it on, it sort of sat on fairly tight, enough to all to make a connection (i tested it) and i thought, fcuk it, i aint soldering it on, wrecked the old screen getting it out, not happy really, wasted a screen

not fully soldered might be why you only get half the screen...

iirc i got the squares on mine when i first built mine before i got the chip so it could be the chip...

its deffo not that mate, the old screen done the same before i removed it.

wouldnt be no good me sending you the complete fcr, as the screen aint on it, i could send you the chip though.

maplins web site is crap, the part number for that voltage regulator dont even work anymore

how much you reckon parts would be if i ordered them from rs to build a new board?
no screen, case, led's, switches etc needed, but all the other little bits on the board? might be easier just to build a new board :(

before my discount and because most of it are multiple packs the cost on the site for all the bits minus the 9 way socket comes in at £64.39 + VAT :S

but in the kit forms i will price acording to individual costs... so would work out a lot cheaper, and the strip board would get me 4 boards

lol fair enough... could always lend you mine if it comes to it..., but send me your chip and i'll test it in mine then you will know for sure

kits work out at £55 (inc. £12 for the chip from Graham) in parts before my SD and doesnt include the wires as will be such small lengths so will be FOC and wont include the 3 pin plug as they are a pain to find lol
