they wont be legal, and will probably melt your wiring, oh.. and there wont be much of a beam pattern. so you'll just blind everyone.

but if harsh reality doesnt put you off, you can get a decent beam pattern by luck and perseverance

imo its not that theyre not 100% legal or blind every sod that put me off my old set, its the fact that extreamly bright modern lights dont suit a mk3 80's styling and persona

Fluorescent lights will have the same effect as the beams aren't directed. You can tell the difference between headlights with too much glare or no glare at all from photos.

I wouldn't go back to HID's I don't think, too glarey, and you can get better light outputs from halogen bulbs :)

I'll have my 5p's worth on this because why not

I have been running HID's for a few years now, and I have honestly been flashed about 5 times down pitch black roads/lanes. I would have thought it would be up to the 50's because they are in halogen lamps but they really aren't that blinding at all - in my case that is. Maybe it's because I do aim then down very slightly too. Of course you get chives who don't know what they are doing and they point into the sky and you can't see a thing.

I parked in front of my garage one night and noticed a slight beam pattern. Of course this is no where near what it should be and the light still looks scattered and s**t on the garage door, but compare this to people who blind the s**t out of you and I think this isn't too bad in my opinion!

Even standing or crouching down in front of the car they don't blind you much.

Obviously I am not saying go get HID's and put them in your halogen lamps because they will be fine, because they more than likely won't be. I think I'm quite lucky with mine, that's all I am saying.

Let's give another angle to this.

You have to aim them down to prevent blinding people.

Therefore, what is the point of having the floor right in front of your car a lot brighter but not be able to see as far? The only 'benefit' being that they look blue?

Having had two sets of HID's (H4 in Mk5 headlights, and H1 in projector lights) and now using a decent pair of halogen bulbs in the MK6, I can't see a reason to go back to HID's. I don't have patches on the road that are lit and unlit, I know I'm not blinding anyone, and I know I'm 100% legal.

You might not see it, but aftermarket HIDs in reflector housings are only one step below badly aligned headlights.

Danny - that beam pattern is totally horrible. I know this is the opposite way round, but this is what they should look like.

I only aim mine down by about 1cm from the standard height that they get alined to each year the the MOT. I dont point them at the floor. Even if I didn't aim them down they still wouldn't blind people.

Comparing my HID's to standard headlights/xenon bulbs or decent aftermarket bulbs and I can see a lot further up any road at all, which in my opinion is safer. I have been driving an Audi for the last few months with decent xenon bulb setup and yeah they do a good job, but you can't see as far at all, so you need to keep switching to full beam down darker roads, then back to main... with mine I can just leave it on main beam and have no worries at all.

I know what the beam pattern should look like, and I know my pattern is horrible and not like it. I did mention that.

At the end of the day, people run illegal mods left right and centre, running HID's which don't blind people and don't cause a problem isn't a big deal in my opinion. Everyone can Bic™ about it as much as they want, even about mine. But I won't be changing back any time soon :)

i simply put it that what you seen in that obviously poor quality photo is alot worse than real life, you'd see that similar effect even if it was halogen bulbs

Postby dontpannic on Sun Nov 18, 2012 9:47 pm

I think where we differ is that I don't want to see HID's popularised as the more people to use them in the wrong housings then the more times we all get blinded when people don't have them aligned.

Also - they may well be aligned appropriately, but alignment /= glare.

I took mine out of my car even though they were aligned correctly because I could see the glare looking at my own car.

what are you trying to say mate?

You do realise this photo is well over a year old? that very hid kit was removed and sold on shortly after this pic, not only were they falling true to your statement, they were also worse off for visibility at night on pitch black roads, as like you said in improper housings, so the beams were sparattic and doing more harm than good

also they aint really period to the car :P :P

Exactly what you've just said Jon! HID's don't belong in reflector housings, and they cause glare.
