Always wanted to, but haven't gopt around to building a flow bench yet.

Don't trust a reply from someone who doesn't own, or doesn't have access to a bench. There's a lot more to it than taking material out of the ports. Taking the Zetec for example, the best results on that head mean extremely little taken from certain areas of the roof, but the best tuners will run some paper over the whole port to make sure the customer thinks they are getting something for their money (they are anyway - but this improves their perception and hides the actual areas that were worked on!).

There is a book that gives you lots of info on this, and it also told you how to build your own basic flowbench :)
It went walkies but i read it a fair few times.
Its not all about just high flow rate numbers, you need to take into consideration the speed of the gas, swirl and tumble.

Best bet is get a book, an old head and try it your self mate IMO :)

8 quid
ive lost more running for a bus

Id like to build a flow bench, but i would invest a little more cash, get a decent manometer and blower.
BUT i dont have that kinda spare cash just now so il need to get someone else to check my heads once im done

let us know how you get on :aviator:

surely antifreeze and a windscreen washer tube or hose pipe would be good enough!! :) if you measure the standard head and mark the flo with a pen then do the same with a ported item you would know a rough % of how well it flows!!???.... what more would you want for under £10? lol

i made it its not hard , all your doing is measuring the pressure drop at what ever valve lift then convert to cfm and you would only want a cfm reading to compare to other heads that have been tested that way:D did you not read any of the info on the link

Looking good mate.. you should surely see some improvement in flow there.

Have you got the bench up and running yet

yes i just need to make valve opening tool, ive left one inlet and one exhaust port standard to measure and then flow test the other 3 and see if they are all within tolerance, the exhaust ports have been opend up over 5mm as they are tiny :( the inlet has only been ported about 1mm

I was gunna ask how you wer gunna compare!! but you have just answered it

if the standard zetec head is good for 350 - 400bhp as you have already proven without even touching it then any gain will be more than sufficient as a "practically free" upgrade.. fingers crossed mate its all good.

Not ken on the look of those inlet ports mate, afaik it needs to be smooth transitions and there are some sharp changes there.
then again im no expert and just going on stuff i read in a book.
Only testing will tell

there is only one sharp edge that still needs a little blending and thats the injector port into the main port, the knife edge seperating the ports should be like that :D .

i would liked to have found the limit of the standard head but i maxed out my injectors then with the time of year i dont use the car that much :( so that was it i started on a few little jobs and ended up porting a head :D 350hp is easy on a blacktop and im sure i would of seen 370ish on the standard head but ill never no for sure .
i just want to max out the turbo next year see how that is and then onto a bigger one :D
