Guide to re-cover Recaro seat's

Postby RS Joe on Sat Sep 19, 2009 8:53 pm

If your driver seat in your FRST is worn on the side, and you have a good donor passenger seat, Don't just put the pass. seat in, (this will put your recliner adjuster on the wrong side of the chair, and make adjustment awkward). Instead, use this simple guide and re-cover your driver seat :D

Tool's required (assuming the seats have already been removed from car)

Possi. screwdriver
5mm flat blade driver
Pair long nose pliers... that's it!

The following pic's are from me removing the cover's from my donor passenger seat's backrest piece, but the same applies to the bottom section but you will need an allen key to remove the seat runners. I chose to just re-cover the backrest and then place it on the passenger bottom piece as that part is the same on both seat's...(as far as I know)

Right, Start by removing the possi screw's from the recliner and the one's on either side where the tilt mechanism locks into place

The plastic cover's have little plastic peg's that need to be pushed out from the rear. Use the flat blade driver and don't be too ruff so as not to break anything, They push out quite easily

Three per side. You will then see the point where the top and bottom join/pivot, with a clip securing it, place the flat driver in the back of the clip and push it off, Being carefull not to slip and tear the seat, Again one each side.

Then tilt the seat and remove these from both sides, You should then be able to seperate the top from the bottom, but don't lose the spring washers.

Now to start removing the cover, Start with the side bolsters. The cloth has little metal rods running through it's seams which are held in place on metal hooks on the chairs backplate which are bent over.
Carefully prise these hooks open with the flat blade

Five down each side and four accross the top
Now we come to the toughest bit, The base of the backrest.(Do not remove the staples that you will see) This is held by two plastic strips locked together, one is sort of 'U' shaped with a lip inside it the other is flat with a lip on it so when the flat one get's pushed into the 'U'shaped one, They lock in place.

Start at the end with the flatblade and try to prise the two apart gently as you don't want to break it. It will come apart in three piece's, Two short bit's on the end's and a long piece in the middle.
Now that's out the way the rest is easy, Start carefully lifting the cloth from the base of the sides, And you will come to this piece of elastic held in place by another clip, push the clip in toward the foam to release it (both sides)

Then remove the side handles (the side handles have metal clips that will probably be left behind on the metal part in the chair, take these off and place them into the rear of the handles so you don't lose them) and remove the 'P' clips that hold the headrests in place and remove the headrest

The whole outer / grey part can now be removed, Now the centre, Unclip the four parts across the top as before

Then peel back to reveal a clip on each side attached to the cloth so don't pull too hard. It's just a piece of coiled wire threaded through the backplate, Use the long nose pliers to pull the clip NOT the cloth it can be re-shaped after

And that's it :D
Now just reverse the process using the backrest from your driver seat, Stick it on your good donor pass. base....

And hey presto a minty fresh driver seat :D
