Hi.
Right I have read and understood all of this, and had in fact worked it out many a year ago by reading the haynes manual wiring diagrams however in my new fiasco (N-reg classic 1.1) I have come across a problem.
There is no E-DIS plug, or at least not where they were, can anybody tell me where I can find the wire I need????

If the car is carbed I believe the signal must be provided by the coil

I have just fitted a speedo in my early 1990 fiesta and it works a treat
i went to ford and they gave my some print outs of the wireing and they were a lot of cop
haynes manual confused me
but the ford diagrams said the last 2 were green and use the second 1 in so thats what i did and now it works a treat
i had to do the wiring as my car had no green cable to the speedo but now work

It's the main engine loom plug (cylindrical plug) underneath the metal plate that's in the picture. Wire colours are the same.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

Every Fiesta has an E-DiS plug, it's just some of the later ones were a different design and put under the plate that is in the picture.

There must be, it's a cylindrical plug which is the main engine loom plug. On ones without tachos there will be a wire coming into the plug from the right hand-side (looking into the engine bay) which does not continue through to the lefthand side of the plug, from memory it's green. That's the wire you need. Don't run it off the coil, the rev counter will read half speed.

Newbie here, excellent site, glad I found it.
I thought it would be best to ask here as it seems kind of appropriate but we have just gotten a 1997 Mk4 1.3i encore (sorry it's not as exciting as the XR, RS or Turbo jobbie).
Anyhoo, it comes with the very basic clocks but I'd like to fit the higher spec white faced clocks with the rev counter.
I know higher spec Fiesta and Ka cars came with one and the same 1.3 engine (the endura e multi-point efi version) we have so I am guessing it might just be a 'chuck out the old and plug-in the new' clocks type job.
Does anyone know for sure?
(......or how about the zetec LCD type?
A more difficult job I bet but a looker when done I'm sure)
Thanks.

mk4 1997 1.3i encore
Ok, so I've skinned and hurt my forearms and finally got the old (no rev counter) clocks out of the car.
(that speedo cable is a horrible b*tch......couldn't they have just made it two or three inches longer, would that be so difficult and/or expensive?
A little extra tucked away in the engine bay to be tugged through a little when needed would be so much easier)
But anyway......
Sadly just simply plugging in the rev-counter clocks didn't bring the rev-counter to life.
Looking at the back of the new clocks I can see that the number 8 terminal has no wire going to it from the car's multiplug (I believe that on the mk4 number 8 is the correct contact for the rev counter).
In the engine bay there isn't an obvious edis plug like the one shown here earlier but there are 2 cylindrical objects which look like they might be covered multiplugs attached to the bulkhead, they look suspiciously like they might be the later version of the edis.
But there are two of them.
I don't want to go on mere suspicion and I don't want to give up with it looking like it's now just simply a matter of running a little wire to the new clocks.
Has anyone done this on a Mk4 and is able to say for sure what is what and where?
Thanks.

It lives!!!!!
Hi guys, I just thought I'd post the full tale cos I have it all working nicely now.
This is a mix of various advice I was given (for which I am very grateful, you know who you are) and my own feeble working it out!
There should be a white/black wire going to either pin number 48 (depending on year, after 2000 it is number 4) of the 'Power Control Module', located behind a steel plate behind the passenger side footwell trim cover.
This wire also runs to the 'Heater Control Module' behind the radio and to the clocks on the later models.
The heater module route would have been the easier method, but having looked in Haynes, my pre-2000 car doesn't seem to have that arrangement (I can't see a white/black wire connecting to any of it).
Pity, cos that steel plate is riveted on and they will have to be drilled out to get at it.
Haynes makes a point about the PCM being pretty fragile too so careful does it I guess.
(on the post 2000 cars the white/black heater wire comes into the clocks on pin number 20 and the tacho should be connected on pin number 21)
Taking a signal from the 'PCM supply' at pin 48 to pin number 8 (on the blue plug) going into your clocks is only half the story.
Pin number 9 (the one next to it, obviously) needs to be connected to earth (I took this from the fat earth wire on the white block - pin number 5 IIRC).
I went to the scrappy to get another set of the proper connectors to cannibalise for the plugs into the clocks to keep things looking pretty standard, tidy and fairly sane back there.
Solder and connect these up and that's it, you are away.
It works and so do all the little warning lights that should too.
(you just have to have the return wrestling match with the speedo cable to make sure it connects properly and that's it, job done.)
Hope this was all of help to someone.

You dont need to replace the green wire in the E-DIS connection block you just connect a wire to it (tap into it) using a scotch lock thing or whatever they are called.
Cheerz for the guide!!
I can now see my revs!!
i t6hink mines an xr2i one but am havin trouble gettin it to work, tryed tappin into the green wire but nuthin. its not braoken cos occasionally it jumps to life readin 3 times the actual rpm? when i turn the amp and electric windows on during startup? any ideas or jus take it to a mechanic

Hi, I have a mk3.5 1.1 classic. And i have fitted the rev counter successfully.
It doesn't have the e-dis module because ford started making the ECUs with an intergrated e-dis.
Therefore the rev counter is fitted by removing the ECU cover in the engine bay, and locating pin number 11... its a green wire. This is a direct rev counter signal and is the wire you need to use to connect straight to the rev counter. so strip off some insulation and solder your rev counter feed to this wire.
Hope this helps anyone having problems...

I don't trust those scotch clips, half of the time they don't work, also they are a lot more bulky and unsightly compared to soldering. I have used this wire on my car to power the mk5 dials, and the rev counter works fine... tho i guess this might not be the case for the different model rev counters i.e. mk3 or mk3.5

Re: Guide to installing a Rev Counter mk3.5
right ive done it i stripped back a xr2i loom and traced the wires back for the rev counter and it goes as follows. It comes off the multi plug on the back of the dials labeled number 10 it goes through a smaller joining block which i belive is located near the e-dis module then from there to a small resistor then from the resistor a green wire then goes to the second from the left green wire on the e-dis module and follow on from the resistor it goes into a black box a relay i belive and out of the resistor the wire goes to the plug on the coil which is the left hand side wire on the plug so if you conect the green wire number 10 wire to the green on the e-dis module the rev counter should work if not u may need to connect the wire to the coil plug as well and bobs your uncle she should rip into life.

Only if you connecting to a Diesel car as diesels don't rev as high as a petrol engine :)
