Guide to installing a Rev Counter mk3.5

Postby Unplugged on Mon Jun 30, 2003 1:36 am

For this mod you will need an insurument cluster from a 1.0,1.1,1.3 Mk3.5 Fiesta that has a Rev Counter. These were commonly late L Plate though M. Look down the scrappy there may be some down here but you will need a cluster from a HCS mk3.5 engine the older fiestas will give incorrect revs. You can use a mk3 that has an E-DIS module but you will lose your airbag warning light (which is not good)

Easiest way to tell is the car will have an Airbag in the steering wheel (bulge with SRS written on it) and an Airbag light in the cluster. Typically they look like this.

Image

Note that the older fiesta panels also looks like this. must be an E-DIS module or it wont work or read incorrect revs

Removal

Once you have sourced one there are two screws in the bottom of the plastic front. Unscrew these and remove the front exposing the cluster in all its glory. In each corner there is a screw, unscrewing each of these will allow you to remove the intrument panel from the dash. In the back there is a big cable and a multiblock. The Multiblock should just unclip. On the speedo cable about a cm off the back there is a white thick plastic ring. This works a bit like the child proof medicine caps and squeezing one side pops out the clip and allows the cable to pop off easily.

Clocks
If you wish to keep your current milage you will need to swap the speedo over. Remove your current cluster following step 1. Remove the bulbs from the top and pop the flexible pcp off. At the bottom of the glass area there is two clips. Push these in to remove the glass and allow access to the dials. On the back of the cluster behind the speedo is two screws that take a T8 *I think* screwdriver. They are kinda a star fitting if you take it to halfords or a DIY shop you will find a screwdriver that fits although most kits have them. swap the speedo over and put the glass pcp and bulbs back on over and you have your current milage and speedo :)

Identify the Loom

If you look at the plug on your multiblock there is a series of numbers running along... If your lucky there should be a green wire coming out of the one marked 10.... If this is the case then you should be able to plug the multiplug and speedo cable into the new cluster screw it back in and your off :) most of the newer models or LX models (with leccy windows etc) will have this loom.

Image

If yours is like mine and wire 10 is missing then you have some wiring to do :(

Wiring Up

If you look at the plug in the previous pic you will notice the front unclips and pops forward. From the donating car cut wire 10 from the loom pop the plug and nick the contact. Insert the contact into your plug and close the plug up. You then need to run a length of wire from this into the engine bay.

Once your in there the other end wires onto the E-DIS Module. This is basiclly a plug with lots of wires going into it at the back-center of your engine bay. Among the wires there are 3 green ones. The one I used is shown in the diagram. As far as im aware this is the right one the other two green wires gave me half the reading .

Image

Connect up your wiring
Connect Up your Speedo Cable
Plug in multi block into the cluster
Plug in the E-DIS Block (if you unplugged it like me and forgot )
Fire up the engine

If your lucky your rev counter will come to life and your car will read around 900-1100 idle :)

Tidy up and screw everything back in and you should be away :)

theres a set of clocks with a rev counter i saw at my scrappy. my le reg 1100 dont have a rev counter, its a basic fresco model mine is, i think this set of clocks with a rev counter were in the back of a mk3 xr2i.

Would they work on mine once i plug them in or would i have to loads of wiring to get them to work on mine?

Cheers

Hey,
Thanks for the tips. I have a question, maybe you've come across this. I have a mk3.5 Si, but the rev meter is a bit on the nut side lately. It 'idles' at 3000, though the actual engine speed is normal. Sometimes it goes down to normal readings, but most of the times it's like this. What d'ya reckon?

theres what look to be a divider circuit on the back of Si clocks as they use a wasted spark system, which means they send what looks like twice the rpms.
Theres a little PCB on the back of Si ones and no others that i think divides the rpm by 2. this might be at fault.

i worked it out, there r 3 prongs on the back of the dials behind teh rev counter. I think the bottom right one is the one that goes to pin 10, so you need to solder a cable onto that. It can be easily traced by following the gold line

Hi guys

I have a question about this.

I have looked at the wiring on my Fiesta, at the plug for the instrument panel, I have no green wire in No 10, so I have to make a wire for this, but i,m unsure where to connect it.

The guide says, it goes to the second from left green wire on the E-DIS connection block, but I allready have a wire in that.

Where would the E-DIS connector block loom be running to?

Thx in advance

Completed this job on my G reg 1.1 fiesta in no more than half an hour.

Used a cluster out of my H reg Xr2i. works fine.

You dont need to replace the green wire in the E-DIS connection block you just connect a wire to it (tap into it) using a scotch lock thing or whatever they are called.

Cheerz for the guide!!
I can now see my revs!! :Q

Unplugged you mention swapping the speedo over, i have a question about that,

is the trip meter thing a seperate unit? my current clocks dont have one but all the ones with a rev counter do, can they still be swapped?

Thanks alot

yes they can. The trip meter is part of it, so u cant have one of them im afraid, but the space for it is totally covered by a black bit on ur counter

Not unless you swap over the whole clock unit.

Sorry been a away for a while if I recall rightly theres two screws at the back of the cluster which allows you to remove the speedo/trip counter/ and odometer from the cluster.... you can then interchange this with the new cluster

Basically the speedo and trip counters are sort of a sub platform within the dash that are seprate from it (as there controlled by the speedo cable) :) its getting the speedo cable to unclip and then clip back in thats the hard bit but with a bit of practice its easy.

Hi,

Is this guide ok for a 1.1 mk3 fiesta on a 92 J plate.

Also if you fit a 140 mph in a 1.1 which is a 120mph dial will it read wrong as fitted a rev counter dash from a debadged no idea what model but it was a K reg with fully opening electric sunroof which was rather cool and 140 dail. didn't notice it was 140 untill we swapped it over. was going to keep the 120 dail into the new rev counter dials but sadly it doesn't have the trip reset. what do people do? or is there a 120mph rev counter dial set?

sadly the rev counter dont work but its pin 10 on a early mk3 to the negative on the coil?

thanks

I have the same problem, bridged it of here and it would only read about 500rpm idle and not go any higher than 3k when reving!?

Does anyone know the exact place that ford get the rev counter imput from,

Thanks

Just a quick note of what i have on my car..

Its a 1995 1.3 CFi, With clocks from another fiesta with a 1.1/1.3 CFi engine i think. They have '1E' on them on the rev counter like the ones above.

Used the seccond wire in on the block thing like above and they work great.
