Nothing to do with the engine,if it has EDIS,internally or externally it will work right.

RPM signal on diesels comes from the alternator. At least on many diesels I've seen. There is a terminal on alternators, that it's voltage changes accordingly to it's rpm.So the tachometer "reads" from that. It's a common practice that is used even on marinized engines. Some vessels use diesel ford engines, that's from where I've seen it.Although can't tell you if the tacho from a diesel will work in a petrol engine and vice versa, although don't think so,since the working principal is different.

not entirely true, not all fiestas hav the wire already in the loom for the rev counter feed, eg 1.1 pops from 1991, cos mine didnt

i was only asking about rev counters yesterday, good to come accross this post, ive just been to my shed to check my clocks after reading (the older clocks will give the wrong revs) and though well ill have the older set its typical of what happens to me.

but luck would have it written on the back fiesta 3 "M" petrol, and on a original ford sticker is the date 27 may 94 also marked fiesta 3 1.6 si

so it seems buy luck ive bought the correct set ready to fit to my N reg 1.1 which i now believe to be the mk3.5 (something ive not heard/known untill i joined this forum.

lets hope the green wire is in the plug on the car (fingers crossed)

i also wasnt thinking about this coil pack set up, ive been so used to oldskool (drove a cortina untill end of sept just gone) and just thought it was a matter of connecting the rev counter to the coil duuhhh
