Guide to getting and fitting a K&N Bolt-On Filter for HCS Engined Fords
(1.1, 1.3 HCS/HCS Cfi)


Finding:

The correct fitting K&N Bolt-On Filter is on that K&N supply for an Orion 1600.
Visit http://www.knfilters.com/ and you can find your nearest stockist. You might be able to buy direct from K&N.
The correct K&N Part number is '56-9042'

Fitting:

If you have ever replaced the paper filter in your OE (Original Equipment) air filter, or taken it off to drill it, then you wont find this much more difficult.
  • Take of the OE air box and disconnect all hosing – there should be two pipes. One from the inlet manifold, the other from the Oil Filler Cap.
  • Block the inlet manifold hose (vacuum hose), example items to block hose with are a metal valve cap, thick screw. To be double sure there are no air leaks, use a jubilee clip or tie wrap. Any leaks will increase fuelling silly amounts (idles at 2000rpm).
  • Get some hose pipe (cheap) or correct bore rubber hosing and put it on the oil filler cap. It's length is to reach the bottom of the car but not dragging on along the floor. This is so waste fumes and crap are not re-cycled back into the engine.

Option, to set it up as per manufacturer.
  • Extend the oil filler cap hose to reach the base of the K&N., either find some longer hose from the scrappers or buy new Silicone or get some cut to length from Halford’s for example.
  • Drill or bore a hole in the bottom plate of the K&N, the hole has to be 2mm too small the size of the hose so it will hold it in nice and tight.
  • Send the extended hose to the base of the K&N.


The reason you have to send the filler cap hose to the K&N is that the car will:

Leak oil fumes into the engine bay, and you can smell the in the car.
To recycle the fumes back into the inlet manifold as it is suppose to (to not dry your valve seals).

Usual disclaimer, I am not responsible for you breaking your K&N*, invalidating your warranty, damaging your engine etc.

*K&N actually suggest in their fitting instructions to send the filler cap hose up and to drill a hole as specified in the above instructions.

Im not sure what a HCS engine is, but i have a normal 1.1 K reg Fiesta Mk 3 i think, will this filter work too?

Wouldn't recommend blocking the small bore vacuum hose - put a hose clamp around it and tighten to adjust the base idle if necessary.

Can you get pics for this and I'll confirm with Ade if it's ok to make it sticky? (Or you could ask him yourself ;)).

I idle never changed from blocking it or having it attached to the original air box, just leaving it open would shoot up to 2000+ revs for idle lol.

Will be getting pics of the base plate hole cut etc ASAP - digital cam is broken.

ive got a bolt on k&n been on my 1.3 hcs in my old escort and my new fiesta, and on a mates 1.6 cvh escort (not xr3i). Ill get pics up and try and get a part number, as it sounds the nuts!

I have got one for sale, that has never been fitted by the person I brought it off apparently. I haven't fitted it because it doesn't fit.

use them if u want mate, u can see the hole that was drilled with the extended pipe, and on the second u can make out the pipe blocked with the bolt to the right

instead of putting that pipe to the bottom of the K&N could you not just buy a small breather filter and fit that instead

I think ive seen that done before too - much easier and looks better, more expensive though

right ive got one and its the same code as above but my base plate does not fit down as easy as yours and mine came with these little L shaped clips it has no holes in the base plate for screws to go into :-?

yea mine came like that,just fitted it now actually,you`ll be suprised at increase of power,well i was anyway.
put the four little L shaped brackets onto the big brass screws that go into the carb after you have put the rubber ring on.
im sure this is suposed to do somthing but mine still moved about at this stage lol.
anyway bang the actual filter element in and if you undo them little nuts on the top half of the K&N you will see that the long things on the otherside come off.
screw these to the little screws as you hold them in the hole (from under the bottom half of K&N) then bang the lid on and tighten nuts.
dont forget to sort out the pipes,ive took the oil filter one down to the floor,and i filled the other pipe with a screwdriver piece from one of them multi head screwdrivers lol.

Unless it came with a small turbo attached, probably not! What it will do is make the system sound better when you boot it, but there will be no real increase in power.

Be aware of the cold starting problems that can occur with these filters. I may be a better idea to fit one after the climate has warmed up a bit, as by binning the airbox, you have done away with the warm air feed to the carb/cfi unit.

No increase in power, and your fuel consumption would go down.

It just makes the car sound better.

Yes good point, sadly when i was fitting my k&N when the weather was warmer no-one mentioned the cold start/running problems - i found out the hard way - they are very bad for creating carb freeze, your best bet is just to stick with the standard air filter over the winter and swap it for your k&N for the summer.

sorry my bad,i should have explained better,no doubt you know more about cars then me but the car is more responsive and quicker off the mark (enough for me/the missus to notice anyway) allthough to be fair the standard filter was a little dirty.

what are you suposed to do with the hole thats left were the warm air comes from anyway,plug it like?
maybe you could make a warm air feed to the K&N for the winter ?? :lol:

Yeah i attempted making my own warm air feed for the winter - it would be very difficult and time consuming to make one efficent enough so it acts like the standard feed - i still got carb freeze with my own warm air feed.

Hi lads,

Where the entry is from the standard air box (at the front of the engine) there is a large bore pipe that comes off when u put the k+n on. However K+N do not tell you what to do with this, and i havent been able to make out what any of you guys have done. It is a corrugated style pipewhich connects to the flat white/beige thingy with holes in :P. As mentioned it is exposed when the K+N goes on. Should this be left exposed or does it need to be covered up with something..?? Sorry for my stupidness, im a bit new to all this stuff.

The hole your meaning is the one from the manifold - that used to be connected to the straight piece coming out of the standard airbox. This is used (particularly now in winter) to warm up the car faster and prevent carb-freeze - this is when the air entering the air box is so cold that the carb freezes and the engine stops.

I have a k&n fitted ONLY in the summer - otherwise i suffer from carb-freeze, and there is no way round this apart from fitting the standard box with the feed from the manifold.
