Guide: How To Adjust Tappets

Postby cheby on Sun Feb 06, 2005 11:18 pm

I have recently been trying to adjust my tappets on my car. I had a go at doing them myself the other day but a master mechanic at Mclaren who used to own his own garage has now shown me how to do them properly.

This is my guide on how to adjust tappets on a 1.3 OHV Cfi Fiesta. I think this guide will also work on a 1.1.

Image

How To Adjust Tappets On a 1.3 OHV Cfi Fiesta

1. Jack the front right wheel up, using a trolley jack.
2. Open the bonnet and remove the airbox, using a
philips screwdriver.
3. Remove the rocker cover, using a 10mm socket.
4. Turn the wheel until 1/2 or 3/4 or 5/6 or 7/8 are “Rocking” and the rockers are both at the same height. This is where the left one is closing (up) and the right one is opening (down).
5. Adjust the correct tappets shown below, using a 11mm socket and a feeler gauge.
6. Put the engine back together and start the car.

What does “Rocking” mean?
“Rocking” is a term used when the rockers open and close
the valves.

Theory

If 1/2 is “Rocking” adjust 7/8
If 3/4 is “Rocking” adjust 5/6
If 5/6 is “Rocking” adjust 3/4
If 7/8 is “Rocking” adjust 1/2

Correct Gap (mm)

1 = Exhaust 0.3mm
2 = Inlet 0.2mm
3 = Exhaust 0.3mm
4 = Inlet 0.2mm
5 = Inlet 0.2mm
6 = Exhaust 0.3mm
7 = Inlet 0.2mm
8 = Exhaust 0.3mm

Please check that the units are correct and for the correct rockers.

Usual disclaimer, I am not responsible for you breaking or damaging your engine etc.

Hope this is a helpful guide to many people.

Cool, I dont use those settings though :P

Might try mine, and standards and see which are quietest. Ive only done it once since owning the car but its pretty much silent now so i may as well leave it.

0.15 is half the specified Ford measurement. That might quiten it up a bit, but that will have a knock on performance.

Ok tried this again thismoring - adjusted the tappets using both MAx's settings and the Ford stated setting - car turns over, seems to "pop" but doesn't fire.

Really fecking pissed off :x Any ideas whats up? I followed the haynes guide and cranked the engine 180 degrees after each adjustment.

To make things worse i snapped one of the rocker cover bolts :x

Yeah i didn't understand why the haynes manual said i had to do that.

That and before even taking off the rocker cover it said to position the crank to TDC :-? I'll give it a 4th try tommorrow :x

Theres a "V" cut into on the crank pulley - and a marker/pointer on the block.

Hey,

Just read the post and a friend of mine couldn't get his fiesta to turn over properly and it turnt out to be the HT leads were on the wrong plugs, so they were firing in the wrong order. Maybe this could be the problem with yours. It did the same popping noise as described too. Hope this helps ...

Cheers for that but definatley aren't the HT leads - ive checked and double checked all the tappets with my dad too. Its very close to firing but doesn't - i think the clearances could be off because the "tappers" themselves are worn into a hole on the exact point they hit the value ends. Im going to adjust them (ie increase the clearences by a fair bit) and see if thats it.

What does “Rocking” mean?
“Rocking” is a term used when the rockers open and close
the valves.

Can anyone explain this in more detail please?

the rockers is the part which open and shuts the valves.

the inlet vaves open to let gas etc in to combust thus moving the piston. then as the inlet valve shuts it moves the exhaust valves at the same time to let out the waste which leaves via the exhaust.

the rockers work on like a piviot so when one valve shuts (inlet) the exhust valve will open.

make sense?

i dont beileve you should do them when they are warm,

for my old beetle i was sugested to leave it over night in the place you wanna check them, then work on it in the morning when the engine is dead cold.

could be different for a fiesta mind, might not matter.

OK, so i tried this at the weekend..following haynes manual. I must have done somthing wrong as it is twice as loud as before. It is a 1.3 HCS engine...

I followed every step carefully but would like to verify a few things please :D

1. When No.1 piston is 'rocking' should all the the rickers but at an even and equal height?
2. When adjusting the the specific ones, is it normal that there is slight play in others?
3. What could i have possbiley done wrong to make them louder!? :P

Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Many Thanks,
Matt

Sorry for double post...but no-one? :(

My main concern is No.2 on list? To explain in more detail; Say I am adjusting 1+2 and these rokers have no play/movement, should it be that 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 rockers have some play in them? :S

Many thanks,
Matt

when no1 is rocking i.e neither rocker on no1 cylinder should move then you can adjust cylinder 4 and yes some of the rockers will be loose on the other cylinders.

Follow the guide myself on a 1.3 LX '96 Fiesta yesterday.
The thing is the noise didn't stop and seems to be louder now :-?
But I gained more power from the engine, seems to respond more quickly.Any ideas what can be done to stop the noise?
Should I use other settings for this engine?
Can anyone provide the factory settings for this engine?
Any help would be well appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi all,

Maybe this will help you.Through many attempts here's what I found out:

The smaller the distance, the louder the engine+cam shaft altering.
Stick to 0.3 exhaust (or 0.5 if it is specified so on the rocker cover)and 0.2 mm intake (model up to '96) and pay attention when you insert the feeler gauge.If you insert it forcing a bit you are compressing the valve's spring even it is not visible.So the insert must be smooth (like cutting butter...)Always begin with No 1 cylinder and check for the little sign on the pulley to be aligned with the TDC mark on the block.You'll get the "prrrrrr" so nice and you'll love your HCS again. :) .

Good luck!
