GUIDE: Convert 3 button remote key to flip key

Postby trecoll on Thu Sep 19, 2013 2:17 pm

This guide is only applicable if your remote central locking key looks like this

You will need to purchase this flip key conversion from topfobs on ebay.

Be VERY gentle with the screws as they round quite easily!

There are two screws on the back of the new key fob. Remove these with a small cross head screw driver.
Carefully pull the key fob apart. The spring may go flying so be ready to catch it!
Once apart, you'll be left with this:
Image

Firstly, you need to get the blade cut. Take just this part (and your current key, or key code) to your local Ford parts department, and they will cut it for £7.20.
Other local key cutting shops may be able to do it cheaper, so shop around.
Image

Now you need to take apart your old key. Insert a slot head screwdriver into the notch on the back and twist it gently and slightly to separate the two parts.
Image
Image

On the larger part, there are two clips to lift gently to separate that part.
Image

The PATs immobiliser chip is hidden inside the little rubber boot. CAREFULLY free this, but pulling with your fingers only! It is glass and very expensive to replace.
Image

From the lower half, you also need to remove the CR2032 battery and its two small contact plates.
Image

From the upper half, remove the circuit board. The black plastic part on top (left in this picture) can be discarded.
Image

The circuit board has two notches in it to line it up. Put this into the top half of your new key fob.
Image

Fit the two battery contact plates into the lower half of the new fob. I found these to be the trickiest parts to line up and was fiddling with them the whole time. This was the reason my fob didn't work at first.
Image

Add the battery and you'll get your two halves like this
Image
At this point, I clipped the two halves together and tested at my car

The glass tube needs to go into the recess by the battery. Note it's orientation is the same as it was when removed from the old fob. I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not.
Also line up the key blade as shown.
Image
I found that my PATs tube was a little rattly, so stuck it in place was a very small piece of Blue (pink in my case) Tack.

Insert the plastic button to the center of the key blade and also the spring (with the part that sticks out at the top.
Image

Put the other half on top, lining up the spring into the recess. It takes about 3/4's of a turn. It's tricky to photograph, but should be fairly obvious with the key in front of you!
Image

Clip and carefully screw the two halves back together. You should result with this.
Image
Close and test the flip of the key. If it doesn't seem a strong flip, you can try rotating the case on the spring another turn.

Finally, once tested in the car and you are happy. Apply the included Ford sticker to the recess.
Image
This is the same size as the original key, so DMB overlays fit

Just to make a point - not all of these keys have the 'pill' type chip - mine had a ceramic one built into the key itself. I had to buy a replacement chip off eBay to place into the new key.

They look like this:

(BBCode is off for some reason!)

They're glued into the three button keys:

and this is the flip key I have:

For mine, I had to glue the top part containing the flip mechanism closed as it popped open when flipping, but other than that the quality is absolutely fine (mine's a new-gen flip key clone).
