got a electrical prob look here first

Problem or technical question?

got a electrical prob look here first

Postby jayrs on Sat Aug 18, 2007 2:24 pm

right, i see so many posts about problmes that relate to fuse/relay or dry connetion problems that i have decided to do this post.

the fiestas suffer with a relay problem, and it is nearly always down to 1 really, the igntion relay.
on most higher spec models its green and has 5 pins, on lower spec models its yellow and has 4 pins, but it is manily the higher spec ones thats suffer.

the relays gets hot, it chars the pins and can and normaly does melt part of the fuse box, but sooted up pins lose contact creating problems.
problems it can cause are, no spark, reverse light not working, heater blower fan not working, rad fan not working, boot pop not working and also some others but you get the idea.

note dampness and corrosion are also a problem, although plugs are fitted with a water seal it doesnt stop them drying out or corroding as well, and this isnt just limited to the sensor plugs etc, it can also happen on fuses and relays so always check them even if they dont look blown, pull them out and check and clean if need be with some fine wet and dry paper, or if you dont have any, scrapping it over with a knife would work too but dont cut ya self for fcuk sake.

the loaction of the igntion relays doesnt change through the years, but should you drop your fuse box and find its not there it may be because its melted the fuse box to a point the pin will not make contact even if you bend them a little so it is relocated to the side of the box with spade connetors, although i think a proper relay holder would be better, but should it be spade connectors remeber which connector went where, or for easy, put a lable on the wires relating to the pin number which you will see on the base and/or the top or side of the relay.
also if you car has a boot pop and it doesnt work, check you have a 5 pin igntion relay if you dont and have a 4 pin that may be the problem as the boot pop gets its feed from the centre pin.

anyway, incase you dont know the location or how to remove the fuse box i have uploaded some pictures to help and copied some info relating to short circuits, earth problems etc.

pictures and writing taken from a online haynes manual which can be found at this link

would it be the relay if just one of those things isnt working, such as my boot popper, or would it make all that stuff not work?
been trying to sort out my boot popper for ages, tried all the stuff people have said and nothing has worked. havnt touched the relays though dont wanna blow myself, or more importantly, my car up :P

if you have a 4 pin one everything else will work bar the boot pop as it wont get any power.
tbh i would remove the boot pop and test it direct on the battery or run 2 wires from the batter and try it, tbh i reckon your boot pop is dead, it does happen

dont waste ta time, connect it to a battery direct, if it dont work, its fcuked, if it does, then look for the break in the line, which will be the earth point in the boot, rusty boot hinge pins, or the boot pins them self.

if you look at my first post again, you see whys of checking etc

Also if your boot release dont work check the wires which can run underneath the carpet in the boot. They tend to fray and even break if you carry heavy things in your boot or happen to have a speaker box sitting above.

:-? they dont run under the carpet though, they run up the drivers side over the arch and under the drivers cluster to the boot pins.

That is possible as when i first got the car there was extra wiring in the boot connected up to strobe lights underneath which flashed with the old alarm.

Installation of twin fans

Postby AndyBlissstick on Tue Jun 30, 2009 8:58 pm

Hi Jay RS

I cannot keep the temp down in my standard mk 3 rst, I should have a new intercooler arriving tomorrow but want to find out if it is a standard mod to add a second fan beside the bigger one in place for the radiator.

What fan is slim enough to fit in?
Do you wire it to be temp controlled like the main fan, or hard wire it in for constant airflow?
Is it worth it?

A second problem now.

The rear sway (anti-roll) bar needs the outer brackets that the bush sit in and screw onto the rear axel. These are the larger out ones, but Ford don't sell them now, either do Partco, Allparts, Europarts. -Who would sell them, or have 2 of them, one for each side. I am in Watford Hertfordshire, but don't mind if they have to be posted as they should fit in a Jiffy bag.

Look forward to hearing back from you.

Cheers Andy

first off, the ARB brackets, ford should still sell them as there a common thing that breaks, worst case have yours welded, i know how that sounds but ive seen it so many times.
but as i say i got some fdrom ford not long agao and ive not heard that there going to be placed on the "no longer serviced list"
PM knuckles mate, he will tell you if he can get you some or not.

as for the temp problem, the intercooler has nothing to do with the cooling side of it.

if its over temp it could be down to a few problems.

thermostat, wrong temp range, or naffed
fan thermo switch in thermostat hosuing naffed or wrong one, should be orange colour one.
fan not working, this could be due to the plug that connects to thermo switch being naffed, the wires break internally on the plug.

or the ignition relay needs cleaning or replacing
fan is not working at all, maybe burnt out/jammed etc

if its gettign hot very quick, and i mean quick it could be due to a bigger problem, head gasket maybe, but i dont know enough to say for sure, all you say is your having trouble keeping temps down, so the chance of head gasket from that is slim but still worth a mention.

as for replacement fan, the slim line fans will do the trick just fine mate, this sort of thing

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SLIM-LINE-RADIATO ... 7C294%3A50

but this is a example i picked off ebay, shop around for the right size and best price mate, and remember, the FRST fan blows not sucks, like the xr2i fan etc.

as for wiring it up, do not hard wire it, you will burn relay out and poss wiring if the fan is allowed to run for a very long time.
the fan running draws a lot of current and thus is responsable for the melting of relays and fuse boxes, which is a commom problem with FRST's, so wire it as ford intented, that way its protected by fuses and relays
