I didn't realise you'd been updating this! You need to put update dates in your thread title Jay! Glad to see you've actually been working on it, bring on the rebuild! That sprayed oil will have been preventing rust ;)

clamp is extra mate, but tray was about £12something, plus vat, fooking cheap for a gen ford part me thinks :o

will be checking the bores to see the amount of wear, waiting to see if my dad can borrow a bore gauge, if they are ok i might not go for a rebore but the rest will be done as the crank needs a grind and im getting a kent cam anyway.

the lip in the bores is tiny, and i mean tiny! cars only done 63k and ive done 34k in it in the 7 and a bit years ive had it, i reckon if the tappet never got mushed the bottom end would still be fine.

im gunna be painting some bits up this week too, stuff like oil pump etc will get a coat of paint just to make it look fresh, water pump is going in spares box as i got a brand new one for £20, so not worth fitting old one back on.

most if not all parts are gunna be painted silver, block, sump, etc, 1 because i dont think a coloured paint will look right with the red samcos ( how i wish i got black ones now) and 2 silver being a light colour, if i have any oil seeps ill see where its coming from and can sort it.

rocker cover im thinking red, breaks the silver up as such.

and i guess i better dig out the shiny bits that ive got from ford fair over the last 2 years, yes 2 years! and they still never got fitted    ready for the rebuild.

apart from that, i got to nip to ford and get some crank seals and some bolts.#

will update again as and when.

bring on the rebuild :D :D

heres a pic of the tappets when it got mushed last year ( new set was fitted as a qucik temp fix till rebuild)

got a new cam kit, kent CVH35, should be with me tuesday/wednesday :D
got a vernier pully of a guy on here also.

got to get a grinding stick as i cant find mine, so i can lap the valves in, once thats done i can build the head back up ready for when the blocks been bored etc.

got dicked hard by the fords parts mate today, £30 for these 3 small bits :o :o

little up date,

nothing has happend with the block or crank yet, it's starting to pi$$ me off a bit as i want to get on but im awaiting a final price from a company via my dads mate who can get it done via his mate at trade, so far and yet to be confirmed its £400, thats rebore, pistons, crank regrind and big's and mains and will prob get them to fit pistons to rods as it saves me the hassle

anyhow, sump has been painted up, gearbox cradle and lower cross member.

ive also paided the rocker cover red, cant be bothered with chrome one, would like one but i got other things to spend my money on at the mo which brings me to my new cam, arrived thursday, nice new kent cvh35 cam kit.

im working on the head at the mo, its stripped apart from valves so far, ill be cleaning it up smoothing out the inlet and exhaust port and re-grinding the valves in, pic's will be posted once all done but ill be fitting all the new bits to it ready for when the blocks done, but tappets will be last to go in, as of tomorrow (sunday) they will be sat in a tin of oil untill fitted, and as for the "dont let engine idle, keep revs to min2500rpm for 10-15 mins" in the instructions, they can stick that right up there a rse

few pic's of bits so far if ya intersted, will get pic's of some of the painted bits once there dry as its takling a while in the shed with the cold

rocker before and after

no mate im fully rebuilding the whole engine, and you dont start a nice new rebilt engine and rev it at 2500 for 10-15mins right away, they say for the cam it beds it in and give chance for tappets to fill, but its boll ocks, as long as the engines primed with oils and the tappets full which they will be as there be soaked in oil till engines done all will be well, but rev for 15 mins wouldnt be too bad if the engine was warm and the cam was the only thing you changed, but even then i would "run in" the cam like that

Mate when fitting a new cam and lifters you have to keep the revs above 2500 rpm for approx 20 mins as it allows the cam and rockers to bed in and harden if you dont then you cam and rockers will be scrap metal in a couple of days.

I have the same worry whilst im rebuilding my engine so im going to run her on the old cam and tappets for 1000 miles to give the engine itself to bed in then im going to fit the kent cam and lifters after that then i will be able to bed the cam in as described in the instructions.

er mate, cam is hardened anyway, rockers are old ones, its all about getting oil round the cam and the tappets filled with oil, its a cop out to cover them self's,
when does the most wear happen on a engine? within the first 20 mins of start up and untill its warmed up and oil has thinned a it not gunna do much, thinner oil will fill tappets quicker than cold thick oil.

run yours how ya want mate, but being a engineer by trade i know what metal does and running a cam at 2500rpm for 20 mins from cold not gunna do anything, apart from warm the engine up and get warm thinner oil about, as i say it to cover them selfs from knob heads sticking a cam in, starting up and driving down the road flat out "testing" it and fooking it up! then wanting exchange/money back etc.

1 thing i do like though is the fact they dont tell you to soak tappets in bath of oil for upto 24 hours before fitting, like ya ment to!!

Fair enough mate keep us posted of how you get on im very interested to see if ive been fed s**t.
I love to learn about all things automotive and it annoys me when not only is the right information not available but the information that is is twisted for some reason.
Ive also been told in the past that the cam and lifters have to be replaced at the same time as they wear together and you should never fit new lifters to an old cam is this true?

some people would dis-agree with me tbh mate but each to there own, there is no point revving for that long at that speed,

cam and tappets, strictly speaking yes you should change them both at the same time, however i have fitted just tappets before and had no probs, not that theres any probs to have just people say you should fit a new tappet on a worn cam, not that a cam should wear that much, but the reason people tend to replace the tappets is because they get noisy but still work the same

little update, head is completely stripped, i started to re-seat the valve tongiht but packed in early as it was getting a little to cold in the shed.

im not gunna bother with polish and porting as i planned as i really dont see the point as it wont make much if any difference on a standard head and the time and work invoved isn't worth the little gain it might give.

little update again, cut the lower front panel off and got the battery tray out over the week end, only had a few hours spare so plodded along doing that.

will be stripping my turbo this week along with another T2 as the groove for the oil seal has worn and it wont seal so will be taking the shaft from the other turbo or even putting the new bearings in that one, which ever way ill make a good one out the 2, well in fact i got 3 T2's and will be buying another which is ment to be good, this week for a spare (another spare)

sould be sorting the little bits of surface rust and preping the front etc for the new panle and battery tray this weekend. wont fit new panles yet as i need to pick up a wing and get that fitted, i want to paint the edge (inside door part) battery tray and front panel before i them as its easy to get to all of it this way, then i can just paint the bits where there welded after again,
wing of couse will be painted with the whole car but i might give it a quick coat just to protect it untill the cars painted.

just wish it wasnt so cold, paint dont like cold weather

even thoug i havent really updated this with pic etc i was gping to now but photobucket is doing something with its site so i cant up load pictures at the mo but i will post on this post when i can.

the sump, gearbox craddle and bottom arm stabiliser have all been painted, as has the alternator braket, and i painted up the new battery try today, i know its still got to be welded in but them small parts can be paited again, i wanted to make sure all areas were paited which to cant do once its in so thats done now.

bit of a set back with the engine, the price i was told has now gone up nearly £200 so crank will be done and block bored then pistons will have to come a little later but the main work will be out the way for that.

head was stripped and ive started to lap the valves back in but i think the paste is really poor so im getting new stuff.

weekend just gone didnt see much work on the car as i felt like cr@p and couldnt really be that bothered tbh, but the rear end way jacked up so the whole things on axle stands now, the rear axle was dropped, and i found the passanger side caliper to be a little seased on the hand brake part so not happy with that, but its off, rear bumpers off, and i took the rear wheel arch off, which i had to do with a drimel, cutting through the bolts to get it off, not a problem as im going to be replacing hte studs like i did on the drivers side rear which i will/should be doing this week.

plans for this coming weekend if its not pi$$ing down will be to remopve the rest of the kit, strip the underside of brake lines, fuel lines and the tank.

oh yeah, i won a gen ford passanger wing off ebay, my mate on the mainland collected it and fingers crossed my dad will pick it up when his over there this week so if time is with me at week end i might drop the bonnet back on and line it all up then have the passanger wing off and prep it ready for the new one.

pictures to follow, for anyone thats intersted in looking at them

oh yeah, has anyone got a idea on how them stupid fuel connections come off the pipe on the tank? ive tried in the past on a mates car but it wouldnt move, anyone?

im toying with the idea of power steering too, anyone fitted it using a electric pump before?

i had to have a poke at the bubbles of rust and this is what was there, still i was replacing this anyway
