Re: 1.8 zetec Bonus Dirtbox Sleeper - Megasquirt Mapped 10/11
Little update.
Car now has rear seats removed, and cobra monaco s seats fitted with sabelt 6 point harnesses, just waiting for a welder i know to weld in the harness bar in the back.

Valve stem seals are on their way out so will be keeping my eyes open for another engine to replace it with and slot the ib5 with lsd in that i've got sitting in the garage, then full weld in roll cage and a respray.
Further developments on the engine will be 38mm gsxr throttle bodies as these are dyno proven with megasquirt to make 170bhp

stem seals leaking .... new engine ?
it dont compute
seals can be replaced without the need to replace the engine
or is there more issues with the lump ?

It's not that you have to replace the engine, but a head gasket set is 40 quid, plus head bolts, and it's still only a 1.8!

It's a nightmare job compared to the CVH... It's not so bad if you can find a bloody valve spring compressor that's long enough and small enough to do the job, but a good one is more than the average 1.8 engine is worth!

Thing is, engines are treated as disposable at this level, its cheaper to replace the lump and will allow for a 2ltr at the same time. Throttle bodies sound interesting Brian, will have to discuss this for mine!

You can build a basic using parts from eBay for £200, you have to bear in mind the cost of refills tho, my first was £90 but I can get it done for £65 now

i found out today of my mate who is a technician at ford dealer. That the stem seals are pretty easy to do without the need of removing the head.
Bring piston to top of the engine to prevent the valve dropping into the bore.
Remove cams etc
remove the camshaft tappets
remove stem seal with a pair of small mole grips or pliers.
or something like that ....

I'm pretty sure that idea involves using an airline to pressurise the head to stop the valves dropping the last bit.
On closer inspection tonight 3 of the plugs were a tiny bit sooty, but not necessarily enough to confirm that it is stem seals. Run it til it blows will be the course of action

Re: 1.8 zetec Bonus Dirtbox Sleeper - Harness Bar 13/1
Today saw another eventful day for dirtbox fiesta! Bedford Autodrome for a trackday. Weather was pretty good and managed around 50 laps of the 3.8mile circuit before disaster struck...
On my final lap going down the half mile straight I went to shift from 4th to 5th, and nothing happened! Looks like the selector fork inside the box has come off or something, 1st and 2nd gear had already gone stiff. Nevermind! Freshly rebuilt ib5 with lsd is sitting in my garage for it once i've got it home again

Re: 1.8 zetec Bonus Dirtbox Sleeper - Trackday Fun 15/1
proper good good day out, car was fudgekin having it all day, shame the box died, probably should have quit when it was starting to go stiff 1st to 2nd, but thats not really our style
Was well pleased with how much I improved getting some proper guidence around the track too
Need that video and i will edit it down.
So the only thing to pass the car other than on a cool down lap was a Porsche GT3
we went around, between us and off the top of my head:
3 x Clio sport / 172
Pug 106 Rallye
Nissan 350z
BMW e36 M3
Porsche Boxster
Porsche Cayman
2 x Audi s3
Merc AMG thingy
Elise
Good times! It was getting ALOT of attention! End of a era today as I now no longer coown it, but kinda proud to have been part responsable for its creation.
