rs turbo, xr2i pistons
hello guys,
some of you may know that im trying to add a turbo to my xr2i. i just wanted to know, are the frst standard pistons forged?
if not, i could take my 2i pistons to work and machine the tops down (i work in a machine shop) and then just drill the holes for the oil feed/returns, sorted. right?
same idea as a compression plate but i thought this would be a 'better' way of doing it... cos if the std pistons on an rst arent forged they should be exactly the same when im done
thanks in advance,

Re: rs turbo, xr2i pistons
will also depend if there is enough metal on the crown to machine it down. which i dont think there is .theres a big difference between the two types of piston im afraid

it will only need to be about 1.5mm from the top of each to lower the cr to 8.0. and there must be enough on top because the pistons must be the same diameter?
thanks

Re: rs turbo, xr2i pistons
xr2i pistons dome out of the block into the combustion chamber, rst ones are flat and are pretty much flush with the block...frst ones are around 8.2-1 so even they would need machining to get 8.0-1.....

cheers for reply, and i didnt want to go to 8.0 exactly i just meant to around the same sort of compression as the rst ones (anything less than 10-odd would help
but that was my original problem: could i just machine 2mm (or x amount) off of each 2i piston or do they have to be forged items? (if the original frst ones are not forged then i should be fine doing that right?)
thanks,

Re: rs turbo, xr2i pistons
machining pistons will always make them a little weaker.
FRST pistons, like xr2i ones are made by mahle, there cast if i remember correctly
oh btw, the xr2i crank is not the same as the FRST one, the throw is different by 0.5mm, not that it makes a great difference as such but thought i should make you aware

okay, thanks Jay
it won't be a permanent thing, it should be fine for running standard boost for a little while until I can afford a forged bottom end (be it cvh or zetec)
thanks again
