yup, by next week i plan

will get my mates hoist and get it back in the garage in the week, then start to take the old lump out, should be piece of piss theres only like 5 wires, few hoses for coolant and fuel and rest is nuts and bolts job

manoeuvring it out will be the tricky part, so bonnet off is a must

with you lived nearer matty i know you'd want to come round

I did my share of engine swaps when i was younger, far too lazy now

Saying that, a couple of weeks back i found myself under a Mk1 XR2 fitting a new engine and a 5 speed box, and actually enjoyed it! :oooh:

my mate was lending me his hoist yesterday as planned, but when i got down there about to lift it in the boot he changes his mind, useless coon

so after that small delay i sourced another, went and picked it up, and to my delight it fitted in the fiesta :Q

Image

Image

pinto ready to come out, only 2 engine mount bolts securing it

Image

Image

parts in back seat
Image

short while later
Image

Image

Image

and what the f**k this thing is
so weird looking, a "torsion transfer device"

Image

first time seeing one of these before, looked a bit different in the college videos

Image

so unbolted it, 5 bolts behind the "flywheel"

Image

Image

Image

took the alternator off and stowed the engine in the corner, ill come back to it later to strip it down

Image

lifted the new engine up and packed up for tonight

Image

Image

only got the hoist for a few days so tomorrow ill be cleaning the bay, as its full of gunky black s**t

and swapping a few things over eg the automatic setup, got a new fuel pump for it, also the electronic ignition

well got stuff swapped over and new engine in, finally after faffing about with the silly torque converter for ages, as it wouldnt line up fully with the gearbox input shaft

anyway its a big thanks to W P E on old skool ford for recommending that i take the engine back out, take the converter off and slot it on the shaft, then position the engine and using the starter motor hole do each of the 4 bolts up that secure flywheel to the converter, worked a treat so thanks man!
hes got the patience of a saint and stuck through my phone calls a few times now :P

so bolted the gearbox to the block and both engine mounts are on and tight, the hoist needs to go back tomorrow as ive already had it 4 days and the garage is busy!

tomorrows jobs are some plumbing, wire refitting and bolt the exhaust back on, not far from firing up! :D

The thing on the flywheel is a torque converter..

Wikipedia wrote:In modern usage, a torque converter is generally a type of hydrodynamic fluid coupling that is used to transfer rotating power from a prime mover, such as an internal combustion engine or electric motor, to a rotating driven load. The torque converter normally takes the place of a mechanical clutch in a vehicle with an automatic transmission, allowing the load to be separated from the power source. It is usually located between the engine's flywheel and the transmission.

The key characteristic of a torque converter is its ability to multiply torque when there is a substantial difference between input and output rotational speed, thus providing the equivalent of a reduction gear. Some of these devices are also equipped with a temporary locking mechanism which rigidly binds the engine to the transmission when their speeds are nearly equal, to avoid slippage and a resulting loss of efficiency.

So have you re-fitted the Auto box with the new engine?

Postby jonyb4 on Sun Mar 25, 2012 9:27 pm

just realised i missed the last update :(

the new engine had different fittings on the inlet manifold so certain ones were swapped with the old engine

Image

Image

also this set of vacuum pipes were fitted from the old, no idea what they do but probs best keep them
as the engine was in a stock car and obviously refinement and comfort werent an issue for that

Image

problem with the throttle linkage, the connector was backwards on the new carb, i unbolted it and turned it around but the second venturi doesnt open fully at full throttle, so might need to swap the carbs over, this one doesnt have the auto choke butterflies either

Image

Image

pic of the thread extractor in the plug

Progress is coming on well :) altho I can't help but think that huge engine bay needs a nice v6 n/a for a turbo'd lump in there  but it's all money these days ain't it  Likeing this keep going can't beat a bit of old school mechanics :) I just can't being myself to like the green 1 :aaah: don't like the colour nor the shape off it but that's my opinion and it's still cool cos it's old and still going in my eyes :Q

i get the feeling myself, not a big fan of the mk1's shape, the RS models are stunning though, its the lights on the front that bug me the most, the lines on the side is really special though, nothing has a massive swage down the side like this these days

are you using this as a fan switch to turn the fan on at a certain temp ?
if so you have the wrong sensor. That sensor is a temp sender which sends a reading to the dials on the mk4 fiesta.
You may have to use a mk5 escort top rad hose like i did and use the correct fan switch

TBH a fan switch is a fan switch is a fan switch. I'd just go down the factors and see what they have to suit that thread, iirc most fan switches come on at about 95 centigrade :)
Nothing to see here...
