ICE Advice?

Postby J-Dee on Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:22 am

OK firstly, apologies if this should go into tech problems.. Not sure if it would be more suited to ICE section.

After a bit of advice on where to go now, Am midway through building my setup and wondered how u guys reckon would be the best way to finish..

What i've got so far is as follows:

- DVD Head unit
- Screen
- 6 Disc changer

These ones - headunit-dvd-player-screen-diskchanger-60-vt174200/

The screen's gunna be fibreglassed into centre console as i hate the idea of havin it bolted to the dash, begging to be pinched if u ask me :) Also with it down there there wont be so much glare when driving at night etc

- 2 sets of Pioneer 6x9s, One's going in the parcel shelf and one into some doorpods ive knocked up for the front doors. They've been angled as well to direct the sound better :)

- Tweeters, I have 2 sets of these as well but not sure whether to use both as it may end up sounding too tinny.. Was thinking of putting just one set in the trim just below the roof above the seat belt bracket (if that makes sense). Will probably be a bit of a bugger to wire but worth a go?
Also thinking the grilles where factory standard speakers are in the back of the car could be a good spot to level the sound from the back of the car?

Still need to sort out what I'm doing in terms of bass and how to power it..

In my last car i had just one set of 6x9s and a 12" sub running off one of these amps - http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/La ... oduct.html
It was pretty phat til my boot leaked and it got soaked :( Thinking i may use another one for the components, should be enough for the 6x9s and tweeters surely?

Now I've got an old Kicker comp 12" square sub but have to decided to buy new stuff.

I listen to quite a variety of music so obviously differing styles of bass, literally like everything from slow, dragging bass in hip-hop etc to stuff as fast n punchy as hardcore/gabber etc
So would i be right in thinking it would probably be a good idea to possibly do diffrent sized subs? My reason for thinking is that the smaller subs say 10"s tend to give the harder punch but a larger one like a 15" would give the deeper, longer tones..

Thinking of maybe going for a 12" and 2 10"s? Gives me a good reason to get on a nice lil boot build as well :D
Not sure how that would fair in terms of powering tho.. Probly eat a lot of wattage :oooh:
Personally I've not had any experience of power caps but does it sound like one could be worth getting?

Anyone got any suggestions/opinions on the matters? Also recommendations on decent amps/subs would be appreciated :)

Cheers for lookin :P

Hi mate, lets dive straight into this lol

- 6x9s are generally a bad idea...if you can change the design then do so...

- the extra tweeters shouldnt be needed if you have a correctly specc'd system in the first place...2 sets of 6x9s are gonna sound harsh but loud...expect no quality to the sound regardless of volume...and things will be made alot worse by adding the extra tweeters...especially in locations where they wont help the sound stage!

- DO NOT run different sized subs unless they are properly controlled by an active xover...each size of sub can not play the same frequencies as another sub....for example, you said 10's and 12's....the 10 will have to play <80hz and above and the 12 will play >80hz ...if the 10 and 12 played the same notes...the bass is not actually doubled...the sound waves actually cancel each other out causing too many issues like phasing! VERY bad idea! if you want to use different sized subs, try 1 15, accompanied with 2 8's or similar...but again, i would NOT recommend it unless you have or can setup systems actively and can setup xover slopes etc etc

also, with todays technologies, you can get awesome all round performers - AWESOME low end abilities to wobble your belly yet punch strong and hard! Its down to the box! which is why my custom boxes cost a fair bit...but man do you get your moneys worth! every customer has walked away happy to hand over money once they see what we can do!

Powercaps are to steered cleared of at all costs! If you walk into an audio shop and ask them about them...if they turn around and say yes buy one...RUN OUT! they are a waste of time! they are actually a hinderance in your system! Once the cap goes flat (which actually takes all of about 10seconds with a 55watt bulb attatched to a 1farad cap....so imagine how long it takes with 1000wrms etc!), it becomes a 'hole' in your electrical system...so now, your alternator has to charge your battery, charge the cap...AND keep the car running while your bassing! People have lost DB by adding caps...stay away!

Subs, NOTHING...and i mean NOTHING beats Ascendant Audio for the money! they are the best subs i have ever used...so musical and play so loud and clean...and coupled with their price...make them my best sellers! You will never look at your typical halfords brands again ;)

Amps - whatever suits your budget...again, stick with respectable brands and if possible...even try to stay away from kenwood, jbl etc etc...might cost a little more, but you will get better quality products

You are not too far from me (im only in west london)...so if you want to pop down, talk a few things through etc etc....my details are on http://www.teamspb.co.uk and ill help out as best i can

Was hoping you'd see that lol, actually started off as a pm to ya but ended up as an essay so thought may as well be a full post

In regards to the power cap, I've always heard to steer clear and it was a very doubtful idea anyways lol but as i dont know too much about them thought it would be worth findin out. Pretty much the answer i was expectin tho there :)

Jus been havin a butchers at the Ascendant range, plenty to choose from lol.. Debating jus goin all out for one of the Mayhem 12D2s, will have to look into them a bit more when i got some time to compare.

Think i probably will be in contact with ya bout it mate as you're nearby.. Jus a case of when i can get up to you more than anything as car's still a non-runner lol. It's not far from done now, but has been for a good coupla months so who knows

Thanks for all that tho mate big help so far ^_^

no problem mate!

Mayhems will require MEGA power...i dont think you will have the boot space for 2 + batteries + amps etc etc...1 may possibly fit though! will require upwards of 2k of power so you will need to overhaul your charging system! extra battery, high amp alternator, 0g cabling throughout etc etc all bits i can supply you with but dont expect it to be cheap...

if you want to see some AA's in action in our polo;

2 Chaos 12's (800wrms each)

1 mayhem 12

my focus with a single 12 havoc is now doing 141.8db @ 30hz ;) off a measly 1200-1500wrms to!!! imagine what its bigger brother will do off 2.5-3k of power!!!

Christ on ice skates! :o

Thats quality man i think much more than that in a festa would probly blow it apart haha.
If im honest id luv to be fine only using one as ill more often than not need the boot space.. Sounds being my priority tho was quite happy to give it up if i needed :P
That havoc looks quality jus on its own
When you say dont expect it to be cheap what sorta ballpark we talkin roughly for say.. a Havoc 12 + box with amp and wiring? Not planning on doin a cheap as chips job of it cuz at the end of the day you get what you pay for rele dont ya and i want a proper job thats gunna last rather than be good for a coupla months then the amp starts overheatin n dyin or something uno

Cheers

the above was a polo with a mayhem 12...2.5kwrms sub, 28mm xmax, 4" coil etc etc
Image

My own one is a Havoc...slightly toned down and more concentrated on SQL...goes loud and awesome quality...

havoc wise I would break it down like this;

Havoc - £270
amp - £400+
wiring and associated bits - £100 or so
sound deadening - £80-150

optional extra will be a battery which will add approx £200+ and dont forget things like components, other amps etc etc

Mayhem will break down as

Mayhem - £400
amp - £500+
associated bits £100 or so
Sound deadening £80-150
Battery will be needed £300-400 (or you can use cheap batteries however i dont advise that)

custom boxes from myself will be £120 for an entry level box if sub is bought through me...they will increase in prices with the more work i do to the box

one thing for sure though...your ears will hurt lol
