Has my bloody MK4 (2001) 1.25i 16v Zetec got a MAF? HELP

Postby 1979damian on Sat Sep 10, 2011 4:57 pm

Hi all, I've recently been experiencing poor/lumpy engine performance, poor MPG & I reckon its running a bit rich (the exhaust is black but not smoking/blowing etc). It judders under acceleration & doesn't pull like it used to. The sparks, HT leads & coil pack have all been replaced the still the issue remains. I decided to try & remove the MAG & give it a clean as suggested by some of the more knowledgeable members but I can't seem to find it. I can't find anything that looks like the pics of a MK4 MAF (with the wires in etc), the Haynes manual isn't any help either (it doesn't seem to have my engine bay layout). The front right area where it seems most people find the MAF is just the plastic pipe for the air intake & the cylindrical thing in the 2nd pic with the stainless steel collar around it just has what I would describe as a white valve that can be opened & closed for airflow I guess but nothing that looked like a sensor. :blub:

If anyone after looking at the pics of my engine bay has any suggestions they would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Oh & I've just noticed when I blip the throttle I get a short kinda swoosh sound for maybe a second or so...and the exhaust is definately blowing. After firing up the engine I put may hand close the end of exhaust & you can feel the gases etc not flowing smoothly. Although it sounds OK from the engine bay when running, it definately doesn't sound very smooth at the exhaust end.

Oh & I've found out my engine has a MAP not a MAF :-? lol

Regarding the Lambda sensor, don't some cars have 2?

Not sure if you have a maf or map,but I can't see any in the usual position. They usually are on the inlet hose just after the air filter housing and before the throttle plate. On your photo I can just see the throttle plate potensiometer. If I am wrong, somebody please correct me.I agree with James, lamda affects fuelling.I would look at it.Also keep in mind that if there is a leak in the exhaust, before the lamda,it would affect it's readings, fooling the lamda with more air and sending the command to the ECU to squirt more fuel.Check for leaks before replacing the lamda.

1.25 have a MAP based management system where 1.4 and 1.6 were MAF, and MY2001 (1.25 had the air filer on top of engine like yours) had twin Lambda sensors in order to comply with the next level of emissions standard

Your TB is missing a screw! It may be the photo, but it also looks like the yellow TPS wire is broken - is that the case?

Brown one too - looks like they're both exposed where they go into the multiplug, perhaps just some internal corrosion on the cable? You, sir, have eyes like a s**t rat.
Nothing to see here...
