Well its quieter than all the other HCS's that are around here, but still 'tappy'.

(It's probably how it sounded when it came out of the factory!)

Well, all the 1.0, 1.1, and 1.3 HCS engines.

Page 2A6 of the Haynes manual, I'm looking at it right now. I think the CVH engines run a timing belt, but the HCS engines deffo run a timing chain.

It could also be down to the grade of oil you use, i believe for the later HCS engines ford reccomend 5w/30 which is stupidly thin and will make it sound worse.

I had 20w/50 in my mk1 1.1 and that was very quiet!

Er...what about the case hardning? I printed off the instructions and showed a guy who knows alot about cars. He said the case hardning will be f**cked when you grind it down and the car will only last a few hundred miles!!!

Eh? Case hardening? ???

Well my engine hasn't exploded yet, and Rawli's 1.1 managed to live until he put in his RS engine...

Could be better if you explain what your friend means....

All he said was dont do it, you'll remove the case hardning by grinding it and it will get even more worn down than before!

Just a thought Rawli, but would the tappet gaps be slighty out after grinding the faces down? I always set mine to Haynes, but I suppose grinding a .1mm off the faces they might chnage.

Did you set the tappets taking that into account or did you set them as normal.

set them when the go back in..... the clearance is only the gap between the rocker and the push valve

if you dont want to do it, dont do it, stop picking holes in my probably 18month old guide, and get a life. plenty people have done it and none have had a problem.

Hey Rawli, I'm not picking holes, I did this ages ago! Fiesta LX is the one with the mental tutor and crazy questions!

I'm only mentioning it because I had the rockers off the other day, and thought about grinding them again. Was wondering if the gaps would need resetting because I'd shave a little off the tappet end. It would seem I don't.

i am really worried now since i only reduced the clearence to 010mm for exhaust and 008 for intake,

its stealth but now i read that affectes the performance!

I will try grinding them down and setting properly.

What is THE best setting?

Errr.... The ones in the Haynes. I think its .3mm for exhaust, and .2mm for inlet. Yours are way off!

Anyway, i'v done it, grinded down, set to 020 inlet, 030 exhaust.

The car is much faster now and it pulls a lot better at low rpm.

BUT its not as quet as before....yet not bad! :Q

Thanks

Look here, I'm not picking holes!!! I just don't want to do something to my car that will f**k it up!!! Don't be such an arsehole just because not everyone is so confidant in your guide. I'm sure the guide is fine and I have nothing to worry about its just that, I don't want to have to buy a new car just because some guy over the internet said it would be ok!

Taken from here: http://www.fordfans.cz/download/manual/0686-02a.pdf

"It is seldom that the cam followers wear in their bores, but it is likely that after a high mileage, the cam lobe contact surface will show signs of a depression or grooving. Where this condition is evident, renew the cam followers. Grinding out the wear marks will only reduce the thickness of the hardened metal of the cam follower and accelerate further wear."

theyre not cam followers as such anyway

just rockers, for the push rods

the noise is caused because you set the gaps with the feeler gauges but as there is an identation that the gauge doesnt account for the setting is out by however deep the indentation is. There are only 2 ways to fix this, grind em flat, or get new ones, grinding is free, it worked for me and many others.

if you dont want to do it, dont fuckin do it, i dont care.

Its not I dont want to do it, I want to make my Fiesta quieter. Its just I dont to do it before knowing that its safe to do and wont f**k up my car. I cant afford to get another car just cause some guy over the internet said its fail safe.
