yer, i did mine with the 0.10 0.15 set up and it does go considerably quieter but i spose it allso depends on how shagged the car is and how many miles its got

HI im a newbie here but i have knowledge...
I did my tappets when i first got my hands on my mk 3...
but a lil knowledge i have is that Ford Galaxy engines are f-ing loud.. so if you make your fiesta loving way to a scrap yard...see if you can get your dirty mitts on the engine bay wadding.
with a little bit of cutting and sticking it seriously helps out that nasty engine rattle.
it worked for me anyway.

I got a escort 1.3 1994 cfi hcs its done about 98k basically the same principles as the fiesta i did haynes settings its still rattling but not as much i think my push rods are worn and might need replacing. I did compare one of my push rods to a new one and the new one was like 2-3mm more length. When you rotate the engine obvously the two moving on the compression are tight but i find the all the other ones you can rock back and forth about roughly 2mm. Basically just wanted to know whether they were suppose to do that other than that i thought your guide was great and easy to follow :/.

Hi, another newbie to the forum as well as to the joys of owning a 1.1 HCS Fiesta, here.
And she's a rattler.
Great guide. Interestingly, a guy who lives near me told me to do more or less the same thing to get rid of the noise. He said use a file though.
Great tips from Roadwarrior, I may try slackening off the alternator belt to see if that helps.
Re. debate about ruining the case-hardening, if the rockers were case-hardened properly in the first place, they wouldn't wear this much in the life of the engine. It's the first engine I've heard of that even has this problem. So I don't think filing/grinding out the dip is going to make things much worse.
Anyway.....
At the weekend, I set the tappets (without filing/grinding down the rockers) and changed the oil on mine, and it now only rattles above about 2500 RPM. And more on the over-run.
Is this normal, or should it rattle all the time if its a tappets problem?

Can you advise whether other tappets can be adjusted at the same time while adjusting tappets 1 & 2 say, I believe I read it some where, that you can.

Sorry to bump an old thread up but...
I reground the rocker arm faces as described, refitted, and then set the gaps to:
0.10 inlet's
0.15 exhaust's
and its BRILLIANT, better power, alot less noise and passed the emissions test this morning at the mot with flying colours
So all in all, just do it

So, just to clarify then (I have very little engine know-how :D) loose tappets are what cause the engine to be loud and tinny?
My Fiesta's engine sounds nasty, so I'll probably try this fix soon, with some help from my bamp. ;)

I'm going to be resetting my tappets soon so If that doesn't work I'll try this :). Nice guide, would be better with walkthrough pics tho.

So who has actually done the grinding? Is it effective and are there any reliable confirmations of what happens with wear afterwards? I'd like to silence my hcs-diesel-wannabe and if doing this is the best solution I'll do it, but only if my engine doesn't go pop!

Sorry to bump an old thread but im about to give this a go and have one question about this case hardening, surely the dome type wear has already worn through it so gringing wont make any difference as all it does is level off in aid to using feeler gauges correctly not taking it below the indentation? correct me if im wrong?
Ive done mine to haynes specs a while back and its better but not great will try the new settings and see how i get on with them but if not ill give the grinding a go cheers

I’m from Portugal and I’m new here.
I really got here by chance, looking for information on how to service my Fiesta HCS 1.1 MK3.
Well, I had taken a look at the Hayne’s Manual and I just decided to adjust the valves, but there’s a great handicap: I don’t know where the “crankshaft pulley” is located. I want to set the (0) mark to the TDC just like explained in the Hayne’s manual, but I don’t get to locate the so called crankshaft pulley. Does anybody have a picture of the HCS 1.1 motor and mark the Crankshaft Pulley on it, so that I can see where it is and do this tomorrow? It would be of great help.

P.S. We can find anything on youtube, however, not a single video on how to do the valve clearance adjustment on a MK3 Fiesta can be found on the Internet. Incredible!!!!!!!!!!

But I know my way around an HCS even after not seeing one for 6 months.
Left hand drive correct? (Driver sat on left side of car, uses right hand for gear stick)
Look at the passenger side of the engine block, right in the guts. Easier to see if you take off the passenger front wheel and look through the wheel arch. You'll see a big pulley that rotates. Keep the drivers wheel on the floor, raising only the passenger side. Engage 4th gear. Rotate passenger wheel/axle slowly and you'll see it rotate, then you'll see a notch, and a point on the engine block.
But I know my way around an HCS even after not seeing one for 6 months.

I don't understand why the Hayne’s manual says that we should adjust those valves that are shut when their pairs are rocking (ex. adjust 1 and 2 when 8 and 7 are rocking). I don't understand the meaning of this, since for me, the most understandable thing is to adjust those that are rocking, cause they are exactly already open. If we follow what the Hayne's manual says, then we would have to loosen them in order to adjust them. But, isn't this kind of weird? Would it be right? Does someone have already done this like that? I insist that for me it is more reasonable to adjust for ex. 7 and 8 are open when 1 and 2 are all the way down, meaning shut.

This is best to work out when doing the wheel rocking. Gently turn the wheel, and look down the row of rockers. As you turn, you'll notice a pair 'activate'. One will go down, come up and the one next to it will then go down straight after. This pair is rocking. The reason you do the opposite pair is so that you get the valves adjusted at the top dead centre point, also being the point at which the spring has fully returned to the top, getting the adjustment spot on.
Pairs are never down at the same time.

Thanks for your answer. So, this is why the one shut must be adjusted, because they are shut, precisely, and that they are at the TDC. If it is like this, I understand it now... however why is it that in this video the guy says that we should do the opposite?

Because that's a different engine, lol. It's got different firing orders and the cam is slightly different in it's operation. Follow the comic, er, Haynes manual.

Could you please tell me in what direction we should rotate the wheel? The crankshaft pulley must rotate clockwise at this job, but would it be the same for the wheel? This makes me wonder whether we have to rotate the right wheel (passenger's side) towards the front of the car or towards the back of it.

Rotate the right hand side wheel, other end from the gearbox and you should see the crankshaft puller rotating clockwise as you look at it. The transmission has three rotating axis' so the wheel goes the same direction as the crankshaft.
With any fiesta, left hand drive or right hand drive, always rotate the wheel on the right hand side of the car, remembering this means as you look forward from the driving seat.
